Murrysville Mayor Joyce Somers presented the Westmoreland Conservancy with the Mayor's Community Service Award on Wednesday, December 16th in recognition of accomplishments. The award was presented before the regular council meeting, during the Mayor's Comments. We had a good showing for this, as many members were present for the award, as can be seen in the photos. After the award was given, we held our regular meeting in the upstairs conference room.

If you have a facebook account, you can view all the photos here:

The Westmoreland Conservancy is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to "acquire and preserve rural and rustic lands for the public good".

The Conservancy acquires property through land gifts, private and state grants, and monetary donations (which are tax deductible).

The Conservancy has particular interest in land which contains special features (scenic, biological, or endangered and rare species).

It also desires to preserve land which provides unique flora, fauna, streams, etc., or land which, because of its location, can help connect reserves and provide "green" corridors.

Meetings of the Westmoreland Conservancy are regularly held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM.

John Muir, an original founder of the Sierra Club in the 19th century once said "Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike." He viewed the natural wonders, the great forests, as they originally stood.

As a small yet growing organization, the members and people of the Westmoreland Conservancy like to think that we have formed our "Club" in the same vein, with concern for conservation, filled and abided by the beauty of our natural wonders, and yet graciously guided with an equal degree of cheer as we celebrate the land. Our woods we have dubbed "nature reserves" are now being set aside and preserved. Why not join us, take part in both the noble part of conservation, and joyful festivities and events we often hold. Come share your interests with others, join an organization where the members are as passionate about the natural world as you are. You might just be the perfect fit for the Westmoreland Conservancy, and if so, we're glad you found us!

You can show your support for the Westmoreland Conservancy and its goals by wearing the new Conservancy logo. Golf shirts, hooded sweat shirts, caps, and tote bags are popular.
