About me

Professor and Chair, Department of Philosophy, Northern Illinois University

(jhanna_at_niu_dot_edu)

My areas of specialization are in normative ethics, applied ethics, and political philosophy. I am the author of In Our Best Interest: A Defense of Paternalism (OUP, 2018) and co-editor (with Kalle Grill) of The Routledge Handbook of the Philosophy of Paternalism (2018). I've recently been writing about the ethics of procreation and parenthood. My other publications address a range of topics in ethics, including self-defense, the doing/allowing distinction, and the significance of consent.

In NIU's philosophy department, I teach graduate and undergraduate courses in each of my areas of interest. I also regularly teach environmental ethics and serve as Faculty Associate with NIU's Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and have been a Faculty Fellow at Tulane University's Murphy Institute.
