I'm a senior researcher at the Research Centre for Regional Economics (VIVES) at the University of Leuven. My research focuses on political economy, economic geography, economic history and public economics.
I obtained my Ph.D. from the University of Leuven in 2019, with a dissertation on the causes and consequences of country border changes. I am currently employed as a senior postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) on a research project that aims to understand the distributive and political impact of the rapid expansion of the (light) rail network in 19th century Belgium. I am also involved as a co-supervisor on a related FWO senior research project that seeks to better understand how Belgium’s forerunner role in ‘railwayfication’ has shaped and continues to shape its economic performance.
