J. P. is born on 22 September 1981 in Milano (Italy). He is married with three children.
Currently he is Assistant Professor "Senior" (italian RTDB) at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University of Firenze (Italy).
He received his Laurea degree in Physics in 2006, magna cum laude, from the University of Milan, discussing an experimental thesis in matter physics. During his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering, held at the University of Pavia, he studied nonlinear optical and structural properties of ferroelectric crystals for photonic applications. During his Ph.D. he participated to several monographic schools and to the formation projects in partnership with Regione Lombardia.
In 2008 he won the "A. Righi " prize of the Italian Physical Society. Between 2008 and 2009 he participated in a Firb project for the application of the materials physics to optical components technologies with the Department of Electronics and the Department of Computer Engineering and System Science of the Pavia University. From 2009 to 2014 he was collaborating with the Physics Department of the University of Pavia and the Material Science Department of the University of Milano-Bicocca for the study of structural and dielectric properties of organic single crystals.
At the end of the Ph.D., in 2010 he was "chercheur contractuel" (contract researcher) at the Départment d'Optique (Optics Department) of the Université de Franche-Comté (Besançon, France), where he designed and developed a new technique for the measurement of pyroelectricity in crystals.
In 2010 he won the competition to become "Young Researcher" of the Firb "Phocos" project at the Department of Electronic Engineering of University of L'Aquila (L'Aquila, Italy). Subsequently he was affiliated to the Physics Department of the "Sapienza", University of Roma as “Giovane Ricercatore” Firb ("Young Researcher") on the same project. From February 2014 to September 2015 was "Assegnista" ("Research Fellow") at the Department of Physics of the "Sapienza", University of Rome. Since 2010 to 2013 he was a member of the IPCF-CNR, Institute for Chemical and Physical Processes of National Research Council of Italy. Former collaborations (2010-2016) were with the University of Insubria (Como, Italy), the Politecnico di Bari (Bari, Italy), the Institute Nonlinéaire of CNRS (Nice, France).
Between 2015 and 2016 he was grant holder at the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering of Pavia University, where he studied new nonlinear microscopy techniques. Since 2016 to 2020 he was research fellow (A2 italian type) at Material Science Department of Milano-Bicocca University; there he was dealing with materials for photovoltaic applications, especially thin films, and he is maintaining collaborations about his previous research topics.
Since April 2017 he has obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor of Experimental Physics. Subsequently he also obtained the French Qualification as Maître-de-Conférences (corresponding to Associate Professor) for sectors 28 and 30 (materials and optics). Since June 2026 he has obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor of Experimental Physics.
Between 2018 and 2021 he was adjunct professor as course teacher for the "Preparazione di Esperienze Didattiche" course (Preparation of Educational Experiences), within the M.D. course in Mathematics of the Milano-Bicocca University. Between 2020 and 2021 he was also member of the Grant Writing Office of the same University.
In 2020 he received an invited external fellowship by Erasmus Centre for Innovation of Erasmus Univeristy Rotterdam.
From March 2021 to August 2024, he served as a Junior University Researcher ("RTDA") at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence.
Since 2021 he is member of scientific staff of LENS, European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy, and since 2022 he is research fellow of National Institute of Optics of CNR.
Presently he collaborates with the Department of Material Science fo Milano-Bicocca University, "Sapienza" University of Roma, University of Pavia, Statale University of Milano, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel), Erasmus Innovation Center of Erasmus University Rotterdam (Netherland).
Current activity deals with the study of processes in ultra-cold fermionic gases for quantum simulations. Other topics are the study of structural, optical, electric properties of inorganic materials for photovoltaic applications, especially thin-film cells. Further research topics are the study of disordered, nonlinear and dissipative systems: specific research topics are physics of nonergodic materials, dielectric and structural properties of semiconductors (organic and inorganic), linear and nonlinear optics of nonequilibrium crystals, optics in disordered systems, the development of nonlinear microscopy innovative systems.
JP is a member of the Italian Physical Society (Società Italiana di Fisica, SIF), European Physical Society (EPS), and Optical Socity of America (OSA), whose he is "Senior Member" since 2019.
To date he is co-author of 83 publications, whose 1 is a monographic book, 51 are articles in international peer-reviewed journals and 31 in national and international conferences proceedings. His Scopus H-index is 18.
