One drawback of the stand inside wing skate sail is that you can not use the full possible righting moment of the sailor which he creates when he hangs out parallel to the ice.
This drawback can be eliminated by using a wind surf sail and make an arrangement that enables the sailor to hang out more than sixty degrees from the vertical sail.
My friend Dick Tillberg and I have made several additions and modifications to the wind surf rig to achieve this, in combination with skates on the feet, but without success.
In order to reduce the air drag of the sailor I made a personal streamlining, see photo. A streamlining, which can reduce drag some 80 %, is essential because air drag in ice sailing is very high due to the high speeds and high relative wind speeds. If for example a (stand inside) wing skate sailor would sail outside his wing his speed would be reduced to less than half.
If there is interest I may be able to put together some information on the basics of streamlining, optimal shapes, and how I built mine.
