Joint staff training event in FRANCE: let IWE begin!
On December 9th-12th 2018, all the project coordinating teachers from the 6 countries met at the French coordinating school for a fruitful and enriching staff meeting. The kick off day was held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg where the teachers attended fascinating lectures by expert speakers: Mrs Miller-Amard, English school inspector in the Académie de Strasbourg, gave a global and rich overview on the French education system to the European coordinating team followed by Mr Dillmann and Mr Hazoumé, history and geography teachers, who focused on the historical perspectives of IWE’s issues. During this training day at the European Parliament the teachers were privileged to bring the project to the attention of their national MEPs and IWE was presented to Mrs Pietikäinen from Finland, Mrs Sojdora and Mr Zdechovsky from Czech Republic and Mr Kefalogiannis from Greece. The team also had the great honour to meet and exchange views on the topics raised by the project with Mrs Sander, French MEP and godmother of the project. The cooperation was warmly encouraged and supported by our European representatives! The second day took place at lycée Camille Sée, in Colmar, and was dedicated to meeting the project partners: The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) of Strasbourg who organized activities for both teachers and students, and the NGO “Terre des Hommes, France” who delivered a complete and eye-opening training session on the reality and concerns of migration today. As a closing session of this day full of learnings, Christine Huckel-Ottenwelter, theater teacher at the French school, offered a time of exchange of good practice and experience to the European staff. On the third working day, the project steering group of teachers concentrated on the organization of the project over the 2 school years. The IWE team deeply thanks all the speakers, project partners and MEPs who contributed to make this joint staff training event a huge success!
IWE team fine tuning in GREECE!
The Music School of Tripolis had prepared a warm, delightful and culturally rich meeting to all the IWE participants between March 3rd-9th, 2019. Students collaborated in all the activities with the local immigrant youth, which emphasizes our project’s main objective: living together in harmony in Europe, no matter where our roots are. In Tripolis, music really was a tool for overcoming barriers. Together with the immigrant youth, the students were composing, performing and recording the IWE theme song “Our European Identity”. Together we danced sirtaki and tasted a variety of Greek goodies. The Erasmus Student Network and the NGO “Terre des Hommes, Thessaloniki” gave interesting presentations to our team, and the cultural visit to sunny Acropolis in Athens will always stay in the memories of the IWE team. We can’t help but keep on singing the fine tunes of our theme song:
“France, Greece, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic and Spain
We share mutual understanding, respect and no pain
Our motivations will help us succeed
Integration and tolerance are everything we need”
Getting to it in FINLAND
The second IWE meeting hosted by Kannaksen lukio in Lahti took place March 17th – 23th, almost right after the Greek visit. The program focused on human rights and integration of marginalized groups which were both handled in various ways. To begin with, all the partners presented their educational systems. Huoltamo, a special student support program in Lahti High Schools, held an interactive presentation of their work. Pasi Salmi from the city of Lahti explained how migrants are integrated in education in Lahti and Ohjaamo, a special student/young person support program talked about their function to help young people to stay active and integrated in the society. We also had the possibility to visit Kaarisilta, an art and activity center for youngsters with special needs (a member of the European Outsider Art association), which was very eye opening. The national day of equality happened to be the second day of the meeting and was perfect to organize a panel discussion about the theme. “I have a right”, a song by the Finnish band Sonata Arctica suited well to be the event’s theme song. Equality as well as other human rights were studied deeply during the longer group work session. On the basis of six charters: equality, solidarity, freedom, citizen’s rights, justice and dignity, multinational groups created their own Young European immigrant’s rights and a video based on the immigrant survey carried out in all the participating countries. In addition to all the work and presentations, the participants got better acquainted with each other during Amazing race – discovering the city of Lahti together, different outdoor activities, Helsinki day activities and last but not least – the farewell event on Friday evening. Then it was time to say goodbye but keep in mind that we all have rights but also responsibilities – the goal is to keep everyone as an equal member of the society.
Focus on: mid-term project EVALUATION
Evaluation of the project by its participants is at the chore of IWE and is essential for the coordinating teachers to oversee the smooth running of the collaboration and make sure the activities are well in line with the objectives. Evaluative questionnaires allowed all project participants (students and their families, migrants, staff) to assess IWE all through this first year of cooperation. The coordinating team met on eTwinning Live on May 27th 2019 to discuss and analyze the results which are extremely encouraging and show the positive impact of the project on all categories of participants. We are all looking forward to the second year of collaborative work and hope it will be as enriching as the first one!
