Trophies and Awards

At its annual meeting in December each year, the Bridge Club of Ithaca awards a number of trophies and other awards to club members. This document describes the criteria governing each of the awards. These pertain to players’ performance over the previous twelve calendar months (i.e., December of the previous year through November of the current year).

To be eligible for one of the first six awards, a player must have played more than 20 times and with at least 5 partners in the games on which the award is based. A player may not receive more than one of these six awards, although he or she may receive the Service Award in addition to one other award.

The Player-of-the-Year Award is awarded to the player with the highest average masterpoints (masterpoints won per time played) in the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday games.

The Spitzer Trophy is awarded to the non-life-master with the highest average masterpoints in the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday games. Players who were not life masters at the beginning of the period are eligible.

The Krauss Trophy is awarded to the player with the highest average masterpoints in the Tuesday game.

The Daytime Trophy is awarded to the player with the highest average percentage in the Monday and Thursday games.

The Versatility Award is awarded to the player with an average of at least 50% (averaged over all matchpoint games played in the year) who has played with the greatest number of different partners in the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday games.

The Most-Improved Player Award is awarded to the player who has shown the most improvement as determined by the percentage increase (over the previous year) in the player’s average (averaged over all matchpoint games played in the year). To be eligible, a player must have played in at least 20 matchpoint games in both the current and previous year.

The Jeannette and Robert Hine Service Award is awarded to a player whose service has made an outstanding contribution to the operation of the club. The recipient is determined by the President in consultation with the Manager. (This award need not be made every year.)

After the annual meeting, lists of the top ranking players together with their scores for the first six awards will be posted at the club and on the web site.
