Dr. Sudip Ranjan Basu is an economist with over 24 years of professional experience in the United Nations system. As of August 2025, he serves as Secretary of the Commission at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Previously, Sudip was Chief of the Sustainable Business Network in ESCAP, a role he assumed in July 2024. From July 2021, he served as Deputy Head of the ESCAP Pacific Office in Suva, Fiji, and earlier as Special Assistant to the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP in Bangkok. Between 2011 and 2018, he worked as an Economist in ESCAP’s Macroeconomic Policy and Development Division, including as Acting Chief of the Countries in Special Situations.
From 2004 to 2011, Sudip was an Economist in the International Trade Division of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. Between 2001 and 2004, he also served as a consultant to the International Labour Organization and the World Bank.
In academia, Sudip has held research scholar positions at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Geneva, International Food Policy Research Institute, Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, and the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (India). He has taught postgraduate courses at the Graduate Institute Geneva.
He has held notable leadership and advisory roles, including:
President, European Spring Meeting of Young Economists (2008–2011)
Coordinator, UNCTAD-led multi-agency Non-Tariff Barriers technical team (2006-2009)
Member, IHS Global Insight–University of Pennsylvania’s Global Outlook Committee (2005-2009)
Member, UNDESA–University of Toronto’s Project LINK Research Group (2005-2009)
Sudip holds a Ph.D. in International Economics from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, where Nobel Laureate Lawrence R. Klein served as one of his thesis supervisors. He also earned an M.A. and M.Phil. in International Trade and Development from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and a B.A. (Honours) in Economics from the University of Calcutta.
An accomplished author, Sudip has contributed to over 40 United Nations flagship reports and written more than 50 research and policy articles published in academic journals, edited volumes, and development forums. His work spans global development, international trade, macroeconomic policy, finance, governance, applied econometrics, and growth forecasting models.
Widely recognized for his policy expertise, Sudip advises governments, multilateral organizations, and diverse stakeholders on international economic and financing policies. His strengths lie in policy formulation, research, advocacy, and consensus building, with a proven track record of managing global, regional, and multi-agency development projects to promote inclusive and resilient economic growth and sustainable development.
