Dr. Sudip Ranjan Basu is an economist with over 21 years of professional experience in the United Nations system. He is actively and extensively engaged in policy formulation, research, analysis and advocacy in areas related to sustainable development, macroeconomic policy, international trade and financing for development. He is a policy advisor with ability to influence and implement development strategy, and has a strong track record in managing global, regional, subregional, multi-country and multi-agency projects to promote inclusive, resilient and sustainable development. Sudip is an adept communicator with experience in knowledge sharing and consensus building.

Sudip was appointed Deputy Head and Senior Economic Affairs Officer of the United Nations ESCAP Pacific Office in Suva, Fiji on 1 July 2021. He most recently served as a Special Assistant to Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Under-Secretary-General of United Nations and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand. Prior to his current position, he served during 2011-2018 as an Economist at the Macroeconomic Policy and Development Division of UNESCAP, including as Acting Chief of the Countries with Special Needs Section.

Prior to this UN assignment in Bangkok, Sudip worked during 2004-2011 as an Economist in the International Trade Division of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, Switzerland. He earlier served as a consultant for the International Labour Organisation and the World Bank during the period 2001-2004.

Sudip has conducted extensive research in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), University of Geneva (Geneva), International Food Policy Research Institute (Washington D.C.) and National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (New Delhi). He has also taught postgraduate-level courses at the Graduate Institute Geneva as well as the summer school program of the Georgetown University.

He was the President of the European Spring Meeting of Young Economists (2008-2011, 2005), Coordinator of the UNCTAD-led multi-agency Non-Tariff Barriers technical team, member of the IHS Global Insight- University of Pennsylvania’s Global Outlook Committee and UNDESA-University of Toronto Project LINK Research Group.

Sudip received his M.A. & M.Phil. in international trade and development from Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) and a Ph.D. in international economics from the Graduate Institute (Geneva) with Nobel Laureate Lawrence R. Klein as one of his thesis supervisors. He had his undergradute studies in Economics at University of Calcutta.

He has written on global development, international trade, macroeconomic policies, finance, institutions and governance policies, emerging markets, applied econometrics and growth forecasting models. He has contributed to more than 40 UN reports, written over 50 research and policy articles in various academic journals, edited books and other outlets.

Sudip has been advising several national governments as well as global, regional, national and international agencies on international economic, finance and sustainable development policies.
