Day -5 (World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, 2022)
Antimicrobials are necessary for life-threatening situations, but improper use of these agents is the primary cause of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is a major concern. The delay in the initial identification of Multidrug resistance (MDR) positive pathogens is one of the promoting factors. Gram-negative bacteria are more resistant to MDR pathogens than gram-positive bacteria. AMR is directly related to an increase in mortality, length of stay, and therapy cost. Unsanitary conditions and improper hospital sewage treatment provide a breeding ground for superbugs. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) settings are the most vulnerable area for resistance because of excessive use of antibiotics. In India, in order to reduce the rate of AMR, there is need of upgrading the surveillance system to international standard. Education for promoting prescription adherence and discouraging self-prescription is equally important in the fight against AMR.
Activity
Day -4 (World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, 2022)
According to ICMR guidelines, Antimicrobial stewardship is defined as a set of coordinated interventions designed to measure and improve the appropriate use of antibiotics by promoting the selection of the optimal choice, dose, duration, and route of the antibiotic which in turn leads to improved patient outcomes and decreased adverse effects.
Here are some components of Antimicrobial stewardship program. Please check out more about antimicrobial stewardship program provided by ICMR.

Activity
Day -2 (World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, 2022)
According to guidelines by ICMR, Human antimicrobial misuse or overuse is one of the primary causes of AMR, and with a dry antibiotic pipeline, it is critical that we learn to use antibiotics wisely and responsibly. As India is the world's largest consumer of antibiotics, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use is essential. So, follow the 8 steps for the rational use of Antibiotics
Activity
Day -1 (World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, 2022)
According to the recent publication in The Lancet, which has been in media over the inappropriate use of antimicrobial in India, the drug-resistant infections were directly responsible for over 1.3 million fatalities in 2019. Experts now warn that the COVID-19 pandemic may have hastened the trend, with a significant increase in resistance to numerous essential antibiotics and antifungals in India over the last year.
