One of the assets of Islamia College Peshawar is its Central Library. It is one of the oldest libraries in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan and was established in 1913. The library is located on the main road of the campus which is accessible on equal distance from all the departments as well as hostels of the University. It has a separate building covering an area of about 13000 Sq. ft. The building consists of two big halls and nine adjacent rooms. One hall and four rooms were added to the library in 1972. Recently two separate computer labs for boys and girls have also been allocated.
It is one of the richest academic libraries in the province, containing 90,000 books and 1261 manuscripts. The library fulfilling information needs of all the students and faculty members of the university through automated library system by using Koha and Dspace. It also provide access to additional resources through various databases by utilizing Higher education Commission Digital Library Resources, which includes more than 10000 journals and around 150000 e-books on variety of subjects. Besides all these HEC Digital Library provides facility of British Document Delivery Service through which specialized resources can be acquired free of cost.
The library has the following sections.
General
It contains all the library collection written in English Language.
Oriental
Publications written in orinetal languages are kept in this section.
Reference
Dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, atlases, world books, thesaurus and other reference material are kept here.
Periodical
Newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters etc. are available for library users in this section.
Treasure of Literary Gems
The most precious and historical material such as manuscripts, old maps, pictures, script of Quid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinah, and other old important material, written in various languages i.e. in Arabic, Persian, Pashto, Hindko and Urdu are placed in this section.
Archives
This section contains the old record of the College such as student registration forms, gazettes, staff personal files and cash books etc.
The Central Library, ICP promotes the mission of the university by serving the curricular information needs of ICP students, faculty and staff, and where possible, the educational needs of the broader community. The Library anticipates and strives to use innovations in education and technology, and responds to the evolving curriculum. The efforts of every member of the Library staff are committed to the ultimate objective of providing the highest possible quality of service.
To these ends, the library selects, acquires, processes, organizes and maintains Library materials appropriate to the academic and cultural interest of this institution. The Library facilitates access to information and materials through the provision of a wide variety of services. The Library provides an environment conducive to learning by providing study and reading facilities. The Library teaches students to find information independently so that they may better perform their tasks as well-informed members of society.
Meet the information needs of the University community by providing timely access to information both through our collection and through access to other digital libraries collections.
Teach all ICP students to be effective users of information, including locating, evaluating and using information and library materials independently.
Make the fullest possible use of available technologies to enhance access to the collection, remote sources of information, and improve the efficiency of the Library's operation.
Work with the University administration, faculty and students to insure that the Library's services and collections are known and utilized.
Provide information and services in support of the overall mission of the University.
Disciplinary Rules
Silence should be observed in the library.
Mobiles should be kept off.
Leave your personal belongings such as personal books, bags, and purses etc at the reception counter of the library on your own responsibility. The library disclaims any liability for loss or damage.
Seats in the library cannot be reserved.
Eating and smoking etc are strictly prohibited within the library premises.
Any student/library member if caught mutilating or stealing library materials will be referred to the Disciplinary Committee and membership will be suspended till decision. If a student/library member continues this act, his/her membership will be permanently canceled.
Library staff can ask anyone causing disturbance.
Membership Rules
Regular staff and students of the University are eligible for membership. All postgraduate students, researchers can avail reading facility during office hours within the library premises.
20 books to the faculty members are allowed to be issued from the library, which can be retained for three months. Every faculty member has to clear his page before the summer vacation every year.
Students of Master Classes can borrow 5 books including 2 textbooks.
Students of Degree Classes of the University can borrow 5 books including 2 textbooks.
Adhoc employees of the University have to deposit Rs 4000/- as Security fee which is refundable.
An intermediate student can borrow 3 books at the most.
The students can retain the books for 2 weeks, which can be renewed for a further period of 2 weeks, if so presented on the due date.
General and textbooks are issued on first come first serve basis.
Library members will submit any book(s) or other material, whenever asked by the library staff.
Do not write, underline or mark any book(s). Library book(s) are carefully examined on return and the borrower will be held responsible for any kind of damage.
Reference material, CD-ROMs, (original) periodicals, and newspapers will not be issued. They can only be consulted within the library premises.
Clearance from library is must both for students and staff members, who intend to leave the university.
Fine Rules
Rs.1/- per day per book is charged as fine in case of late return of books from the students.
Incase of loss or damage to the book, market rates are charged from the borrowers. If the book is not available in the market, triple cost of the book will be charged from the borrower.

Cataloguing Services
Cataloguing services includes OPAC and Catalogue Cabinet.
OPAC: Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) facilitates the library users to access the library collection via Internet and Intranet, which saves the time of the reader.
CATALOGUE CABINET: Library users can also consult the Catalogue Cabinet, if they want to access the information manually.
HEC Digital Library
The library also provides access to HEC digital library where 45,000 e-books and 23,000 journals are available online.
Internet Services
Internet services are also given to the library users for their assignments and research work only.
Reader Advisory Services
The library Notice Board is available in the entrance of the library to aware the students from the latest information.
Library orientation classes are also arranged for new students of the University.
Library Sign Boards also help students to find out various section of the library such as newspapers section, reference section, oriental publications section, section of general books and section of periodicals etc.

Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) refers to a technique for directing new items of Information, from whatever source, to those individuals whose current interests in a particular subject are high, and who may be able to take advantage of such information.
