The Royal Burgh of Irvine, located on the western coast of North Ayrshire in Scotland, has produced a remarkable number of remarkable people: a publisher whose business remains a global brand leader 120 years after his death; three internationally respected artists, born within a period of 40 years of one another; America's leading Shakespearean Actor of the 1880s to the 1920s; a pioneer in nautical engineering; a pioneer in the Scottish Stained Glass Renaissance of the 19th Century, who also trained one of Britain's most innovative and respected decorative artists; a poet/journalist/publisher/social reformer who is a hero to the people of South Yorkshire; and an author who founded two towns in Canada.
