The research group is engaged in work on ionic liquids in a broader sense. Ionic liquids are the compounds that comprises solely of ions and have much lower melting point (usually below 100 deg C) contrary to ionic salts. The unique physio-chemical properties of ionic liquids that includes low vapor pressure, wide electrochemcial window, ionic as well as electronic conductivity, varying and controllable solvating ability and high thermal stability attracted great interest from the scientific community around the globe for different applications. The utilization of ionic liquids as solvent medium, amphiphiles and functional materials for different purposes such as creation of self-assembled systems, micro-emulsions, nano-material (preparation and characterization) and iono-gels is exploited. The design and synthesis of new ionic liquids that may be applied for certain specific applications or preparation of new materials is expected to drive the work in this research group.
