FACTS: At its peak in 2002, The Disney Store operated 1,440 store locations in 53 countries and territories around the world, with 792 of them in the U.S. across 48 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. And of the 1,440 total store locations, 1,224 of them were company owned whilst the remaining 216 of them were licensed. At that time, the chain operated in countries and territories that also operated Toys”R”Us, which at that time operated 2,080 store locations in 64 countries and territories around the world, with 1,172 of them in the U.S. across 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. During this time frame, The Disney Store was a mall mainstay covering nearly every major mall in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Africa, Hong Kong, Philippines, and Israel. It also featured 89 international airport shops as well as more than 120 outlet stores, several department stores overseas, some lifestyle centers, and flagship stores along many city streets and districts. In addition, the company opened 23 pop-up stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Utah, and Washington state for the 2002 holiday season. Starting in 2002, the chain began closing underperforming store locations due to poor holiday sales the year before. By the end of the 2002 fiscal year, the chain had closed 44 store locations in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Singapore, and UK, with hundreds more to close starting in January 2003.
