The general objectives of this course are as follows:
· To familiarize the students with the fundamentals of literature in relation to English language pedagogy.
· To introduce the students with different types of literary readings, theories and their characteristics.
· To acquaint them with the phases and operational levels of literature
Below are some course specific objectives:
To have working knowledge of literary theories and readings
To be able to critically evaluate existing literary practices and materials based on your understanding of theory
To develop research tools for the classroom which are informed by theory and readings
to use technology skills to enrich their professional expertise.
Course Description
This course provides readings to literature in language education. It aims at providing the students with overall understanding literary works in general, and the specific research activities carried out in English language teaching and learning in particular. The course consists of 29 readings texts including several themes.
Classroom Activities
Before coming to each each class (on each week) you will have read the material that goes with that day and come prepared to discuss the themes and topics of that days reading. the materials will be uploaded in this site or be provided in hard copy in advance to you.
PORTFOLIO ACTIVITIES: You will create five Portfolio Activities. The Portfolio activities will demonstrate the adaptation of skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom lessons and can be contextualized or reflected in English as second language (ESL) or English as foreign language (EFL) context.
ARTICLE PRESENTATION: In addition, Students will be asked to present one (in powerpoint, optional) of the supplementary articles from the list. You should address:
What is the study about?
Present, define, and summarize any theories or terminology presented in the article.
Discuss the theme (Subjects/participants, treatments, instrumentation).
Present and discuss the major ideas and literary links.
What comments and reflection do you have to offer?
This activity will lead them to develop leadership, enhance presentation skills, make your presentation eye catchy, learn about the literary practices which will be the useful tool to help for the further second semester as well as in the M. Phil Studies.
My Professional Background
Me, Ashok Sapkota, is working as a teaching-assistant and instructing students on (Second Language Acquisition, Research Methodology, interdisciplinary readings ,Applied Linguistics and Linguistics in application) in department of English Education, Central Department of Education University Campus, Tribhuvan University,Kirtipur, Nepal since 2010. Furthermore, I have been working as a lecturer in Kathmandu Shikshya Campus, Ramshahpath, Kathmandu, Nepal Since 2009 instructing students on second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and psycholinguistics as well as supervising the students on their theses and worked as a lecturer in Chaitanya Multiple Campus, Banepa, Kavre, Nepal during 2008-2010 facilitating students on second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and psycholinguistics as well as supervising the students on their theses.
I a M. Phil Scholar in M. Phil in ELE programme under Kathmandu University and persuading my dissertation . In 2007, I received my M.ED. in English Education. My Masters'research topic is on Soci-economic Status Marginalized Group Children. Regarding my pedagogical orientation, I instruct students on Psycholinguistics, Phonetics and Phonology, Second Language Acquisition Applied Linguistics, and Research Metholodogy for Language Education. Furthermore, I facilitate micro teaching practices, and supervise theses of students in the university. I have also been working as a researcher under University Grants Commission, NELTA, Kathmandu Shikshya Campus and Dean's Office-Tribhuvan University. I have completed some online courses on differentiated instruction from University of Oregon, United States and in College Writing 2.1x: Principles of Writing English from Berkeley University of California, United States. I have participated in Hornby regional Schools training, Sri Lanka in 2012 and Teaching Excellence and Achievement Programme in United States in 2013.
I am a teacher trainer under British Council Nepal, particulary ETTE project and Project NIITE, NELTA, Bungmati Foundation Nepal, ECC Lalitpur, Nepal etc. I have travelled more than 52 districts of Nepal on different events, training and exchange programme. I have worked as teacher trainer under British Council at 2008 in 14 village development committee of Baglung District in 2010 under ETTE project and in 2013 participated in teacher training as ETTE project, British Council as teacher trainer. I have participated in Hornby Regional Schools training, Sri Lanka and travelled Thailand as a form form of professional development. Recently, I have got an opportunity to travel United States under Teaching Excellence and Achievement Programme (TEA) which was a wonderful to exposure for myself to share, reflect, learn and bridge the ideas on pedagogical understanding and sharing, cultural sharing between the Nepalese schools and US schools.
Regarding my professional affiliation, I am a membership secretary (Centre committee) in Nepal English Language Teachers' Association ( NELTA), Member: International Association of Teachers of English as Foreign Language (IATEFL), ELTecs, TESON and South Asian Teachers Association, etc.
Regarding my hobbies, I hope hiking, traveling more new places, listening music, dancing, collecting foreign currency as a history etc.
