Introducing Instrumented Education

Because of of the flood of smart devices and tablets entering classrooms, we have an opportunity to teach in new ways. Often, teachers use these devices to download streaming media to support ideas, engage students in applications that make drilling on content more fun, and as a resource for looking up data. The problem that may occur in the pedagogical method is that as we leverage these devices more, we move from empirical confirmation like working on a real frog to working on a simulated frog. It's certainly more convenient to work on a digital frog. It minimizes the logistics, the storage, the safety issues. But the digital frog cannot offer the same confirmation of reality the way a real frog can.

It is not as though these smart devices force the teaching style in those directions. Indeed on many smart devices the gyroscope, hall effect sensor, accelerometer, infrared-capable camera, infrared proximity sensor, microphone, and speaker can open up a whole new world of instrumentation to the classroom. Students can begin to sense the unseen world of electromagnetism, sound, acceleration, and more in a quantifiable and instrumented way that confirms details of the natural world.

Creating a sense of accessibility and tangibility of sensor-based reality on the small and local scale of the device is important in helping students understand how modern science is done on large scales with sensor grids spanning the globe, remote devices streaming vast quantities of data, and the farthest reaches of our human understanding being informed with digital sensors. To understand this on a local level is to be empowered to engage it in depth on a larger level.

This site is devoted to helping students and educators identify apps (applications) for smart devices that can leverage the potential of new smart devices as the powerful data collection devices they are, packed with sensor arrays and full of analytical, presentation, and storage capabilities.
