John 1:1–5 ESV and Audio

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Message: The Overcomer

Scripture: John 16:16-33 ESV

The Overcomer: How do we know it will be all right?

How do we know that everything will be alright in the end? In many ways, that’s the very question that was haunting the minds of Jesus’ disciples. Jesus had told them to prepare for battle, that the persecution that was coming for him would come for them also. They no doubt felt like underdogs.

Have you ever felt like an underdog? Maybe you are facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles, harsh realities, painful setbacks, and crushing sadness. You’re asking Jesus: "How do I know that it will all be right in the end?" Jesus addresses that honest, deep, and heartfelt question in our passage from John 16:16-33.

Because Jesus overcomes, we too will overcome.

Jesus is the overcomer in three spheres:

1) Redemptive History

2) Divine Reconciliation

3) Personal Transformation

1) Redemptive History: Jesus overcomes sorrow with joy. This is true for Jesus, this is true for the disciples, and it is also true for us. Because redemption is not just something God did one time for Jesus; redemption is the story of history. Our God is a redeeming God. He takes what is broken and makes it whole, what is marred and makes it beautiful, what is sorrowful and turns it to joy. Jesus is in the business of overcoming sorry with joy.

Jesus is the Overcomer in: Redemptive History (vv. 16–22)

• Jesus overcomes sorrow with joy.

16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

2) Divine Reconciliation: Jesus overcomes estrangement with reunion. We were made for relationship with God. But our sin separates us from God and we experience estrangement. But God, in His great love for us, sent His Son to do whatever it took to bring us home. On the cross Jesus died in our place and for our sake, bearing all our sin and shame, covering us with his perfect life, so that we might be reconciled to God. Reunited with him. Jesus overcomes our sin, shame, and separation. He becomes our Substitute and Savior so that we might become children of God. We can then cry out “Abba Father.” Jesus is in the business of overcoming estrangement with reunion.

Divine Reconciliation (vv. 23–28)

• Jesus overcomes estrangement with reunion.

23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

3) Personal Transformation: What on earth do you do with your own undeniable failure? How will you ever find peace? Jesus overcomes faithlessness with faithfulness. The disciples who fled from Jesus due to their fear, weakness, and faithlessness experienced personal transformation through Jesus. The faithless became faithful because of the faithfulness of Jesus, who did not abandon those who abandoned Him, who did not fail those who failed Him, but who overcame evil with good. We too can overcome fear, weakness, and faithlessness because Jesus overcame those things.

Personal Transformation (vv. 29–33)

• Jesus overcomes faithlessness with faithfulness.

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Takeaway: Whatever we face, since Jesus is with us, will be all right in the end.

-Jesus is working redemption in all history.

-Jesus has reconciled us to the Father.

-Jesus is transforming us by his faithfulness.

PASTOR TO PEOPLE

Today is a bittersweet one for our Moody Church family as we launch our own Pastor Michael Best out to sunny California to become the Lead Pastor of Morgan Hill Bible Church. Michael has served as our Student Ministries Pastor for the past 11 years. That means he’s been the longest serving youth pastor in Moody Church history! Through his shepherding, hundreds of our students have grown in their knowledge and love for the Lord and in His service. Pastor Michael has also provided leadership in other areas of our church, including our Camp and Sports Ministries and most recently the Sunday Night Service. And who can forget his comedic side that made our New England Dinners so memorable?!?

We’re excited to commission Pastor Michael this morning for the ministry to which God has called him. We pray that the Lord would empower him greatly as he faithfully proclaims the gospel through the preaching of the Word. We ask that Michael would have a deep sense of the Lord’s presence and strength working in and through him for the good of the church and the glory of Christ. And we pray God would protect and watch over him and his dear wife Kristin and their precious daughter Arya. May the Lord bless them and keep them.

To Michael, Kristin, and Arya: please know that we will miss you terribly. We are so grateful for how you have served well here at The Moody Church. And we await with anticipation what God will do in and through you in the years ahead. Please always remember, you are loved, more than you know!

Pastor Philip

Scripture Reading John 2:1-11 ESV

John 2 ESV and Audio

The Wedding at Cana

2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

“Who are you? When we are asked this question, we typically don’t shoot out our date of birth, weight and height. We share a little about our careers or our hobbies, a small portion of our identities. Is this how we respond to who Jesus is? We may know a lot of information about Him, but do we know his heart?”
