Message: Running to Reality
Scripture: Ruth 1:1–6

Invocation
Worship in the Splendor of Holiness
Audio: Psalm 96
96 Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
2
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
4
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods.
5
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
6
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
8
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering, and come into his courts!
9
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;[a]
tremble before him, all the earth!
10
Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.”
11
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12
let the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
13
before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

SERMON NOTES
The Book Of Ruth
Series: MERCIES IN THE SHADOWS
Message: Running to Reality
Scripture: Ruth 1:1–6 ESV
Pastor Philip Miller
Three realities to run to:
1. Life is full of grief.
• The Bible is utterly honest about suffering.
• Takeaway: Learn to lament.
2. Our instincts are often dangerous.
• The same sufferings can make us turn to God or turn our backs on Him.
• Takeaway: Lean in closer.
3. Sometimes going back is the way forward.
• Our pride is usually the greatest barrier to experiencing Godʼs mercy.
• Takeaway: Let it die.
Naomi may have abandoned God, but God never abandoned Naomi.
Ruth 1 ESV
Scripture: Ruth:1-6 ESV
Naomi Widowed
1 In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. 3 But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, 5 and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.
Ruth's Loyalty to Naomi
6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that the Lord had visited his people and given them food.
