the first Wakatobi shop opened in December 1995 at the Bintan Resorts ferry terminal, and was selling handicrafts from Bali and Central Java  ~  there were then unfortunately no souvenirs to be found that were made in Bintan, or in the Riau Islands  ~  with increasing request from tourists looking for something special made locally, and helped by the increasing cost of shipping handicrafts from other parts of Indonesia, our team decided to start designing and making local souvenirs

Wakatobi, by now a registered trademark, is producing in Bintan a wide range of originals handicrafts, working closely with local communities and providing much needed jobs  ~  all products share the same design philosophy, which is a specific blend of simplicity, elegance, tradition and functionality  ~  they can be found in the Wakatobi shops, and in various retail and spa outlets within Bintan Resorts  ~  we also provide very attractive customized corporate gifts and souvenirs with company logo and personalized packaging (special orders)

the Wakatobi shop located within Bintan Resorts is at Nirwana Resort Hotel in the main hotel lobby (open daily 8am till 9pm on weekdays or 10pm on weekends)

• the Gunny Coasters, one of the best-selling Wakatobi handicrafts made in Bintan was awarded the Seal of Excellence for Handicrafts Products in Southeast Asia by Unesco in 2004  ~  this Seal is awarded in recognition of demonstrated excellence and standard-setting high quality in craftsmanship, creative and successful alliance of traditional skills and innovative application of indigenous material, traditional technique and endogenous design, expression of cultural identity and traditional aesthetic value, and respect of the environment
