During your 5 day rotation in the woods area, you will be working on a small project. This is only a small sample of what woodworking is about, as you will continue to get more exposure to woods in later years. Hand tools, the drill press, and measuring tools will be utilized to complete the project.
The following are the steps that must be followed to complete the project:
- Obtain a piece of material from Mr. Miller that is 3/4" x 3/4" x 9"
- Measure and cut the material to 4" lengths using the hand saw. You will need 2 pieces that are 4" long.
- Sand the ends so that they are straight and smooth.
- Mr. Miller will drill a 3/16" hole completely through the ends of the pieces
- Measure 1/2" from both ends on both pieces. Measure to find the center of that line.
- Drill a 3/16" hole completely through the material on ONE end of both pieces.
- Drill a 3/16" hole half way through the material on the OTHER end of both pieces.
- Sand the entire piece smooth. There should be no pencil marks visible on your pieces.
- Stain your pieces. Ask Mr. Miller for the stain and the rags to use.
- After the stain is dry, ask Mr. Miller to drill a hole for the string.
- Ask Mr. Miller for the string and apply the string using the diagram below. (A straightened paper clip works best for this step)
- Apply a bolt and wing nut.
- Put a SMALL amount of wood putty on the end holes to cover them.
- Put a piece of tape on your project with your name on it and turn it in for grading.
