Fellowship in Limb Reconstructive Surgery
Method of training:
By being a part of the patient care team at the various hospitals where I do my work, based at Mangal Anand Hospital, Mumbai. The Fellow moves to various hospitals (usually with me, but occasionally independently).
By independent reading and work with patients undergoing reconstructive treatment.
By participating and independently carrying out various clinical research projects, under supervision.
There is NO didactic teaching – only interactive learning.
Goal of the Fellowship:
1. To arm the candidate with the knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career in Reconstructive Orthopedic Surgery by
i. Providing exposure and training in Reconstructive Orthopedics (Complex Trauma, Osteomyelitis, Arthroplasty, Non union, Deformity), utilising various forms of fixators and internal fixation. Exposure to Arthroscopy, Hand Surgery, and Spine Surgery by visiting Consultants who are well known figures in their fields.
ii. Underlining the importance of preoperative planning, and postoperative care.
iii. Teaching fellows that excellence, and research can and must be pursued even in a private practice setting
iv. Teaching fellows that honesty among ourselves and with patients is the best policy, and that success can be achieved by following the straight and narrow, ethical path.
2. To create the next generation of practitioners and teachers of the Ilizarov principles.
Duration:
1 year (extendable)
Qualification:
MS Orth / DNB / D Orth
Stipend:
1. 15,000 per month, PLUS
2. Free accomodation in hospital. Only SINGLE accomodation is provided. If you wish to get your spouse along, you would need to arrange for your own accomodation.
3. Food allowance (~3000 per month)
4. Reimbursement for travel, stay & Registration fees for Oral / Poster Presentation at a state / national meeting.
5. Award for publication accepted in a peer reviewed journal (study done during fellowship) – Rs 25,000.
Certificate of Completion:
On successful completion of the fellowship, a Fellowship certificate (of completion of the fellowship), will be given
Fellows Privileges:
Access to all books, access to internet, computer facilities, access to all patient xrays and records for academic purposes. Scrubbing with me at various locations.
Fellows Duties:
Fellow will be part of a team including myself, two other full time consultants at CLLR, and occasionally another fellow.
Provide service cover at Mangal Anand Hospital in combination with other fellows and / or resident surgeon at MAH. On occasions when there is no RMO (house officer), which may be often, one of the fellows will be the first on call to attend to post op patients and any walk in trauma patients.
On days that I am not in town, to maintain continuity of care by being present in the hospital and OPD for the routine timings
Provide telephonic backup to patients who are on fixators or followup
Supervise positioning for special xrays as needed.
Maintain proper notes for OPD and indoor patients, such that will provide adequate data for future researchers, and also to stimulate/enforce a thinking process for the fellow himself.
Do preop planning for all cases undergoing surgery, including steps of surgery, implants etc needed, and arrangements in OT at MAH, and co-ordinate with residents at other hospitals if the surgery is at other hospitals.
Routine post op care like dressings/ suture removal / fixator adjustment / teaching of pinsite care to patients in the wards and OPD.
Study records and xrays to perform either a prospective or retrospective study for publication and presentation during the fellowship tenure.
Leave:
Not more than 1 week in a 6 month period. Preferably for very important reasons only. Leave to be coordinated with other fellows or resident surgeon to provide continuous cover at Mangal Anand Hospital.
If for reasons such as illness, a candidate takes more than 2 weeks leave during the fellowship, he will need to work an additional period equivalent to the leave availed, before a fellowship completion certificate can be given.

The referees will be contacted directly to learn about the candidate’s suitability for the fellowship and his ability to benefit patients/colleagues by his training. Preferably the referees should be someone with whom the candidate has worked in the recent past.
The fellowship application is considered complete only when the referees have responded to the request for a reference for the candidate, therefore it is suggested that you confirm the email address and ensure that they respond to the request.
The fellowship is granted on a first come first serve basis, to the suitable candidate whose application is complete.
Once the Offer for the fellowship for a particular period is made, and the candidate accepts, any change of date will not be possible, so please consider ALL your circumstances BEFORE accepting the offer. Once accepted, only in very rare situations, would any changes be made.
Candidates accepting an offer for a date in the future, and then backing out at the time of joining, have basically robbed another deserving candidate of the opportunity, and therefore will not be considered in the future for fellowships.
