Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Professional Courses/ Examinations conducted by Insurance Institute of India Note: For IRDAI/ Regulatory Exams and trainings, please refer to the tab IRDAI Examinations on III web portal.

 Q.1. What is the criteria for enrolling in the Institute’s Professional examinations? Ans: Any person who has passed S.S.C. or any equivalent examination and completed 18 years of age can register and enrol for the examination.

 Q.2. What kind of courses does the Institute offer for Professionals and Surveyors? Ans: The Institute offers Licentiate, Associateship and Fellowship courses along with specialised diploma courses and certificate courses viz. Marine/ Fire/ Health etc. Please refer our Examination Hand Book available under  Examination tab  Examination Handbook. The Institute conducts pre-licensing test for insurance surveyors as per the guidelines provided by IRDAI.

 Q.3. When and where the III’s Professional Examinations are conducted? Ans: Online examinations are conducted all over India and some of the SAARC/ Overseas centers every quarter (4 times in a year). Q.4. Are the Diplomas awarded by the I.I.I. recognised by the Insurance Industry? Ans: All segments of the Indian Insurance Industry including Insurance and Reinsurance companies, the Insurance Regulator, Insurance Surveyors, Insurance Brokers, Third Party Administrators and all other intermediaries recognize the Institute's certifications as the highest Indian qualification in Insurance and with various incentives encourage their employees to appear for the Institute’s examinations. Insurers in many overseas countries also recognize the qualifications of the Institute. III certifications are also recognized by esteemed overseas institutes viz. Chartered Insurance Institute in UK, LOMA and CPCU in U.S.A. and Insurance Institute of Canada by offering exemptions to the Associates and Fellows of the Institute in their respective qualifications. 

Q.5. What type of exemptions are offered by overseas educational institutes to the Associates and Fellows of the Insurance Institute of India? Ans: The Chartered Insurance Institute, London grants subject wise credit points to the Associates and Fellows of the Insurance Institute of India in their ACII program consisting of 290 credits (refer crossrecognition of Institute qualifications from examination handbook). The American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters, U.S.A. grants 1 exemption in their prestigious CPCU designations to the Fellows (Non-Life) of the Insurance Institute of India. Life Office Management Association, U.S.A. grants 2 exemptions in their FLMI designation to the Fellows (Life) of the Insurance Institute of India. Insurance Institute of Canada grants 3 exemptions to Associates and 4 exemptions to Fellows of the Insurance Institute of India in their CIP program consisting of 10 subjects. Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development (ACORD) considers III Licentiate as a 2 | P a g e Updated on 21.10.2022 prerequisite for their Acord Certified Expert (ACE) Program. These Institutions may make changes in their policies from time to time. For availing the benefits stated above, candidates have to contact the said institutions directly and comply with the terms and conditions applicable. 

Q.6. Does the Institute have any special tie-up with overseas educational institutes regarding discount in fees etc.? Ans: The Institute at present has a special scheme of arrangement with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), London. Kindly refer Important Information Menu available on the right side of the home page of the website.

 Q.7. How many subjects do candidate have to pass in total to qualify for the "Fellowship Diploma"? Ans: The candidate has to choose the compulsory Actuarial subject (details given in the Examination Handbook along with the optional subject) at Fellowship level to acquire 240 credit points. Candidates would have already earned 250 points (i.e. 60 points at the Licentiate level + 190 points at the Associate level). The total credit points required would be 490 credit points (250 + 240 credit points). For detailed information, please refer Credit Points system available under Examinations tab on our web portal 

Q.8. What is the passing criteria for the Professional Examination? Ans: All Professional examinations are conducted by III are in the Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) pattern with the passing criteria of 60% and above without any negative marking.

 Q.9. What is the time limit to complete the Examination? Ans: After introduction of credit point system from May 2012, there is no specific time limit as such to pass Licentiate, Associateship, Fellowship, Specialized Diploma, Surveyors Examination, etc.. However, there is a validity period for the Credit points as detailed below. 

Q.10. What is the validity period for Credit Points accumulated by candidate? Ans: Validity of the credit points of each subject passed expires after 5 years, if the candidate is unable to pass full Associateship within that period. That is, the candidate will lose the credit points of only those papers that that he/ she has earned before 5 years and those taken within 5 years, remain with him/ her. To compensate for the lapsed credit points, candidates can take up the same paper/ another paper. However, in respect of candidates who have passed and been elected as Associate Member of III, the 250 credit points earned will always remain at their credit. After passing Associateship with 250 credit points, if a candidate acquires additional 240 credit points within 7 years with one compulsory subject (Actuarial), he/ she will be declared as passed in Fellowship.

 Q.11. Can a candidate enrol for both the branches together for the examination? Ans: Yes, as per credit point system, candidates are given the flexibility to choose the subjects of his/ her choice from the available subjects i.e. from both Life and Non-Life branches and accumulate credit points on passing them. 3 | P a g e Updated on 21.10.2022

 Q.12. When will candidates get "Hall Ticket/ Admission Card"? Ans: Hall Tickets/ Admission Cards are not physically sent by the Institute. Candidates should download the Hall Ticket immediately after booking the examination slot successfully through their login from the Examination Registration tab. 

Q.13. How should candidates prepare for the examinations? Ans: III courses are "Self-learning Study" courses and candidates are expected to study the prescribed course content in depth and also assimilate additional information relevant to the subject to gain knowledge. Candidates are expected to go through various magazines, journals, reference materials/ books related to the subjects.

 Q.14. What is the process of enrolment for the Examination? Ans: Candidates can enrol for Professional, Surveyors, any Specialized Diploma Courses and Examinations through the online mode (during the stipulated time period). He/ She can do so through the nearby Associated Institutes as well. 

Q.15. What is the Examination fee? Ans: Please refer to the tab  Examinations  Examination handbook Chapter no. 13. Table of fees  Indian & Foreign fees according to the credit points. 

Q.16. Is there any provision for refund of "Fees"? Ans: Once registered or enrolled for any III examinations, the Registration fees, Examination (Enrolment) fees or any other fees are not refundable or adjustable under any circumstance. 

Q.17. Can candidates change the center of examination? Ans: Change of Examination Center is possible only within the enrolment period, through the candidate’s login from Exam Registration tab  View/ Edit paper details.

 Q.18. Where are the Associated Institutes situated? Ans: You can check the nearest Associated Institute by accessing information from our website in the tab Affiliates. 

Q.19. What are the career prospects after completing the various courses offered by Insurance Institute of India? Ans: Insurance Institute of India is an academic institution and the only body in India that provides professional certifications in insurance. The Institute conducts courses and examinations for awarding professional Certifications in Insurance. The activities and achievements of Insurance Institute of India from 1955 has placed our country on the world map of Insurance Education. Candidates can become well-versed in the insurance domain, and gather technical and operational knowledge related to insurance by undergoing the Certification and Diploma programmes conducted the Insurance Institute. Certifications of Insurance Institute are recognized by both Private and Public Sector Insurance companies of India, the Insurance Regulator, all Insurance Intermediaries.  Q.20. What is the process of registration for new/ fresh candidates? Ans: Every candidate needs to create a ‘username’ and ‘password’ for registering/ enrolling for the professional examinations. Please read the Help Manual available under the Examination tab on our web portal

 Q.21. What are the further processes for the candidates after registration? Ans: Please refer to the tab  Examinations  Help Manual  Already Registered candidates. 

Q.22. What is the process by which the registered candidates can making changes? Ans: Candidate can login with their credentials on III website then click on Exam Registration  Profile  scroll down page and select Edit Profile. 

Q.23. I am a new/ fresh candidate for the Surveyors examination. How do I register myself with the Institute online? Ans: To know about -  Surveyors Examination in general check in the Portal tab Examinations Surveyors Examination Pre Licensing Test for Insurance Surveyors  New Registration for Surveyor Examination  Refer to the tab  Examinations  Help Manual  Surveyors.  Surveyor Examination Enrolment period/ Slot booking period/ Examination dates and Result Declaration dates  refer to the tab  Examinations  Time table  The schedule for Online Examinations for both Professional and Surveyor examinations is the same)  Only those candidates whose Name, Enrolment Number and Enrolment Date are appearing in the Eligible Candidates List provided by IRDAI can apply for the Surveyors Examination.  Surveyor Licenses are issued by the IRDAI only. The Institute conducts the Surveyors Online Examination only.

 Q.24. Whether candidate will receive the hardcopy of the mark sheet after declaration of result? Ans: No, after declaration of results, the candidates for Professional Examinations of III can download the soft copy of the mark sheet using their Login id and pass word. Hard copies of the mark sheet are issued only for Surveyor candidates. 

Q.25. Is there any provision for Retotalling of marks. Ans: Retotalling of Marks is available only for Offline examinations. Candidates who wish to take advantage of the facility of retotalling of marks should apply through online mode before the prescribed date for Offline examination mode.

Q.27. How can candidates check whether the subject enrolment was successful? Ans: An auto generated mail will be sent to the candidate on their registered email id after a successful transaction. For checking the enrolment, you are requested to check the below mentioned path: Login to III portal with your login details  Exam Registration Menu  View/Edit Paper Details. 

Q.28. How can candidate will download the receipt of Examination fees? Ans: An auto generated mail will be sent to the candidate on their registered email id after successful transaction. If the same is not received, candidate can download the transaction receipt with his/ her login credentials from III portal under the Exam Registration Menu  View Transaction Details. 

Q.29. What should candidates do, in case he/ she forgot his/ her login details? Ans: In such cases, candidates are requested to send a mail to along with his/ her Registration Number, Date of Birth, registered email id and mobile number.
