The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) is India's leading recognised professional society devoted to the advancement of Science and Technology of Electronics, Telecommunication & IT. Founded in 1953, it serves more than 53,000 members through various centres, whose number is 52, spread all over India and abroad. The Institution provides leadership in Scientific and Technical areas of direct importance to the national development and economy. Government of India has recognised IETE as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) and also notified as an educational Institution of national eminence. The objectives of IETE focus on advancing electro-technology. The IETE conducts and sponsors technical meetings, conferences, symposia, and exhibitions all over India, publishes technical journals and provides continuing education as well as career advancement opportunities to its members.
Maintaining and improving professional competence is one of the greatest challenges that working engineers face today. IETE organised several programmes and activities to equip and update professionals with the dynamically changing technical environment. IETE organises periodic conferences and workshops like the Annual Technical Convention and Mid-term Symposium where the state-of-the-art in concerned workshop are discussed. Besides, symposiums and workshops are organised all over the country at local and zonal level to extend equal participation opportunity to all members. The Institution promotes and conducts basic engineering and continuing technical education programmes for human resource development. The IETE conducts the following examinations:-ALCCS (Post-Graduate Level), AMIETE (Graduate Level), DIPIETE (Diploma Level). The IETE has instituted a Research Fellowship scheme since 2004 .
AMIETE & DIPIETE have been recognized by the Govt of India, UPSC & others as equivalent degree & diploma in Engineering for the purpose of recruitment to superior services/ posts under the Central/ State Government and also by many Universities/ Institutions for the purpose of admission to Higher education in respective Engineering disciplines. To increase the activities of IETE in the state of West Bengal, a sub-centre has been opened in Burdwan. This is the second establishment in West Bengal other than the Kolkata Centre. The Burdwan Sub-Centre is currently operating from the Department of Physics under the patronage of The University of Burdwan for the last three years. Over the period, the Sub Centre has organized several one day seminars, workshops and has ventured jointly ventured with other Institutions/ Organisations in organizing programs in the fields of common interest. In near future coaching classes for IETE students of the region are being planned. Currently there are 62 corporate members under the Sub Centre and the number is increasing. We hope, in near future, this Sub Centre would flourish with help and support from all corners towards dissemination of scientific knowledge and professional activities.
