Welcome to my site my name is Chris La Jara,     UPD: 08/22/21

Thank you for coming to my site, I have posted pictures in the past of this system and I wanted to give it a 2018 make over and include installation steps and how to configure this system for novice users.

Things you will need to configure this.

One file server (VMware ESX 4.0/Workstation 6.5 or real server grade equipment)

One Copy of PC-DOS 7.00 or MS-DOS.

One Copy of Netware 3.12 or Netware ELS Version 2.15 (note this is very hard to configure if you don't know what you are doing.

Netware 3.12 can be found on the internet most cases free. Note you will need the first disk of it which has the licensed Server.exe file. The licenses are 5, 10 , 50, 100 and 250, these are connections.

One Copy of BASICMHS for Netware Mail Integration

One Copy of NetView Netware Management

One Copy of IBM Classroom LAN Administration System 1.30 or 1.50.

ICLAS supports 5, 10, 50 and 100 users, if you have more nodes than that you will have issues, that's why its good to have a passthru server. I have more than one. Netware 3.12 supports up to 8GB volumes.

====== INSTALLATION STEPS ======

Launch VMware Workstation ( this is just like you were going to setup a real server )

File > New > Virtual Machine

Select Typical then click Next >

Click I will install the operating system later.

This is very important! Select Novell Netware then in the Version make sure it says Netware 5. We are not going to install version 5 since ICLAS is not supported on this server OS.

Its time to name your server in Vmware come up with something good.

Its time to setup your virtual hard drive, leave the size alone. Click Next.

It should look like then when you click finish.

OK Now we are going to start the fun stuff...

Let start your VM > click the play ICON in the ribbon. Or right click it and click Start VM.

at first you will get a PXE boot screen, don't worry about that..

Double click the disk on the bottom of the screen. I am installing this with floppy's

Make sure you select connected and connected at power on.

Click on browse and point it to the PC-DOS or MS-DOS FLP files

Make sure you select Disk 1 of your floppy image.

Click OK then restart your VM by clicking the restart button or right click the VM and Click Reset

Click Y then press enter.

Click Allocate some free Hard Disk Space.

Click 1 then press enter > then 1 again then enter.

Make sure you click N not Y then press enter.

Leave the file size alone and press enter.

Now your OS partition is created.

now press ESC to continue, note there is one more step and thats making the partition an active one so you can boot off it. Select 2 then press enter.

Press 1 then enter.

Then press ESC twice to reboot.

Setup will continue > Click Y to install DOS then Click format drive and press enter.

Press Enter until you get to the end.

This is the tricky part, since you don't actually have a floppy drive and you cant put the disk in an out, you will have to swap images. press ALT + CTRL to get the mouse out of the screen.  Click the floppy disk at the bottom of the Vmware console and browse for the next image then press OK, then return to you VM by clicking in the box. Then Press Enter to continue to the next disk. Repeat the process for the next 7 disks. You will have to do this for all Netware Disks as well unless you have the CD version and that will be simple, all you will need is the first disk and then the rest are on CD.

Dismount the floppy from the VMware console by right clicking the floppy disk at the bottom of the screen and clicking disconnect then return to the dos screen and click enter.

The server should reboot.

OK now its time to install Netware Server.

This is the same step as doing the DOS installation. Insert the Install Disk, then SYSTEM_1 disk this has your Netware License on it and also has the setup instructions

go to your A:\ Prompt  by typing A: then press enter.

Type Install then press enter. " You will get this message "  Press Enter or any key.

You want to select Install new Netware v3.12 then press enter.

Select Retain current disk partitions.

Come up with a good server name.

Press Enter to continue.

Press enter to copy the first disk.

Now its time to swap disks, do this until the installation is complete. Do this for System_1 and System_2 as well as unicode.

Note you may have IDE driver issues and you may have to do it the back way to install, which is obtain a patched version of the IDE drive which is ISADISK in vmware. I will publish all of the patches since Novell is no longer supporting it or offering driver support. You will have to dig on the internet to find the Y2K patches.

Press F10 to accept the values below

Choose DOS Filename Format. Press Enter.

Press No then press enter. we can change this later!

Click Yes then press enter. After that you it will bring you to the server console. : or the Servername.. as shown below.

Next type ISADISK then press enter. - this will setup the harddrive so you can mount volume.

Now type load install

Select Disk Options > Partition Tables

Then Select Create Netware Partition ( this is where I said that you may have issues with this. if you have server errors you can get the ISADISK patched version > copy ISADISK.dsk from netware then copy it to the server.

Leave this alone and press ESC to create the volume.

If done successfully you will get the result below. Press ESC until you get to the install options then select Volume Options.

OK now its time to make the SYS volume which is needed to run ICLAS. Press the Insert button on your keyboard this should open another box.

Press ESC to create the volume

It's thinking... wait time is varied..

End Result!

Press ESC

Next > click on System Options > then press Copy System and Public Files. You will get this message below. Press ESC to mount the volume.

Yes to continue.

Now do this for every disk, this is the same as the PC-DOS install. You need to swap images in Vmware.

Insert the Unicode disk after you have installed SYSTEM_1 & SYSTEM_2

Its now installing the system files to your SYS partition. Replace the image for all 8 Netware Floppies.

You will get this message once it is complete!

Now its time to Create the AUTOEXEC.NCF and the STARTUP.NCF this is an equivalent to the config.sys and autoexec.bat file you would use in DOS.

Select Create AUTOEXEC.NCF - a blue box will open. Press ESC then click YES to save

Do the same for the STARTUP.NCF. This time it will ask you for the location of that file, leave it alone and press enter.

Press ESC to save.

Return to the previous menu by pressing ESC.

Now click on Product Options.

You should be at this screen now. Press INS (Insert) on your keyboard and point it to the next product.

We are going to be installing NETVIEW. Point your VMware Floppy to DISK 1 of NETVIEW.

Press OK then return to the Netware console and press enter.

Press Enter to install it on the current server.

It will ask for the second disk, swap images then press ESC.

Once completed you will get the following message below.

Lets to the same for BASIC MHS so press ins then point your VM Floppy to your image.

Press Yes to accept long name workgroups

Press Yes to accept short name workgroups.

Press Yes to accept the mail volume.

Press enter to continue to install the other disk.

Press the space bar to close and return to the installation screen.

Now that you have completed the installation of your first Netware Server. Press ESC and Close out of the install screen. This will bring you back to the server console.

We are done with the Netware Installation - Congratulations!

Now the fun part... Since this is NOT Netware 4x there is no direct way to install the network drivers without using console commands. ICLAS will not support Netware 4x. ICLAS uses Bindery, 4x uses (NDS) Netware Directory Services.

Now its time to install the PCNTNW.LAN driver that is use in VMware to support Novell Netware.

To shut off the server type DOWN then press enter.

Type EXIT to return to DOS.

Find PCNTNW.LAN on the internet and put it on a FLP image then mount it to your server.

you can download a copy of WinImage on the internet to create floppy images or use VMware Workstation to create them. You will still need WinImage to put the file on the floppy disk. NOTE: you will still need to format the floppy image just like you would a real one. The Steps are below.

Click on the Floppy Icon at the bottom of your Vmware Workstation console.

If there is anything in the floppy image location you can highlight it and press delete...

Click the Create button

Type the name of the floppy image you want to create IE (NIC Drivers)

Click Save

Press OK to return to the DOS Screen.

Now Type Format A: /Q then press enter

Press N then Press Enter to return to the C:\ Prompt

Click Disconnect on your floppy image.

Open Winimage

Click File then Open > then click Virtual Floppy image *.vfd, *.flp as the file type. Then locate the virtual floppy image then click on it then click Open.

Click Inject > you will need to location were you put the PCNTNW.LAN

Vmware uses AMD PCnet 32bit Network Driver.

Press yes to add the files.

Click the save button (Blue Floppy Disk) Close WinImage and return to VMware.

Go to Vmware and connect the image

switch to your A: PROMPT note if the disk isn't connected you will get an error.

now type DIR to view the content of the drive. You should see two items.

Now type copy *.* C:\SERVER.312

Type C: to return to the local hard disk.

This will bring you back to the server directory C:\SERVER.312

If you only see a C:\ prompt type the following

CD\

CD SERVER.312

you should be at the directory below.

lets start the server.

type server.exe - If you get the MHS screen press ALT + ESC to return to the console screen.

Now we are going to load the NIC Drivers and Bind them to Netware

TYPE LOAD C:\SERVER.312\PCNTNW.LAN

Keep the SLOT number that it chose.

If you get a message that says cache buffers getting low, you can increase the buffers in your config.sys in DOS. I have chose to ignore this error.

Now its time to add this line in your AUTOEXEC.NCF

TYPE LOAD EDIT SYS:\SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.NCF

Type the following in the text editor

LOAD C:\SERVER.312\PCNTNW slot=10001 port=2000 int=A frame=ETHERNET_802.2 name=IPX

BIND IPX TO PCNTNW NET=ED001 ' By binding your NIC to IPX this allows you to establish a network connection to your client workstations.

Press ESC to save. It will return to you the console screen.

TYPE CONFIG at the server PROMPT.

The screen above shows you that your server is configured correctly.

Now its time to launch the Netware Monitor screen to check its availability

At the command prompt type LOAD MONITOR.

At this screen you can monitor all information on your server, from network activity to file lock information. You can also clear user connections if they are stuck and cannot login since ICLAS only allows you to login as the same user once, you can modify this in SYSCON. My suggestion is to add this console at boot, you can modify your AUTOEXEC.NCF to include this by adding the following command after MHS (LOAD MONITOR)

To check to see if your LAN driver is configured correctly go to LAN Information.

Congratulations, you just setup your first Netware 3.12 Server.
