Reflection on the book “Why Tongues?” by Kenneth Hagin
Reason #5: Speaking in Tongues, A Means Of Keeping Free From Worldly Contamination
Discussion Day 6 by Fola Emoruwa
Contamination is the action or state of making or being made impure, dirty, stained by polluting or poisoning. In this regard, worldly contamination implies, things that can make us impure or things that affect our right standing before God. Some of these could be gossiping, malice, bitterness amongst others. Hence, one of the antidotes to staying free from worldly contamination is to pray in tongues regularly & consistently
If we had read the book “why tongues” we would remember the story Kenneth Hagin referenced about the little girl he advised to stay praying in tongues whenever she was angry, that this would keep her from staying angry. The testimony of which was shared much later. Praying in tongues keeps us in right standing with God i.e. it helps to leave a life of righteousness in Christ Jesus. Praying in tongues does the work of sanctification by setting us apart from the law of sin & death.
The beauty of this is that praying in tongues can be done any day and at any time. Personally, I am always in a rush every morning and so when I am having my bath I pray in tongues, when I am inside Lagos danfo or maruwa I pray in tongues, when I am on the road waiting for public transport I pray in tongues, because this is a spiritual exercise that can take place anywhere and at any time. The more we are consistent and stay in the place of praying in Spirit, the more the Holy Ghost would be able to help our weaknesses. The Holy Ghost then begins to prune us & gradually the sin consciousness is chipped away.
1Cor.14:28: “If there is no one with the interpretation, then he should remain silent in the meeting, content to speak to himself and to God.” The Passion Translation. I love the emphasis on the content to speak to himself and to God. If we can pray in tongues while sermon ministration is ongoing without disturbing the next person seated to you, this means that we can also speak in tongues wherever we are. At your workplace during lunchtime, when colleagues are discussing something you don’t feel comfortable with, you can choose to pray in tongues.
