Opening Keynote: Dr. Paul Kotz
TOPIC: Reconnecting & Tapping Our Strengths
Dr. Kotz is a career educator with education and business expertise. This includes working with high school, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in the areas of management, leadership, operations, strategy, statistical analysis and doctoral research preparation. Prior to his teaching career, he was a reinsurance actuary in both life and property casualty insurance. He also served as a manager for customer service at North American Life and Casualty prior to his education pursuits, and director for General Education at Anoka Hennepin Technical College.
He serves as an executive coach specializing in Myers-Briggs, 360 Degree Review assessments and counsel to those in crisis or career transition. He has written articles in the area of teaching leadership and the unique characteristics of individuals who are considered effective in what they do. Dr. Kotz's teaching philosophy is unique in that many students in his ethics, organizational effectiveness and statistics courses would say "I think I'm in a philosophy course" as he takes a broader view of the mechanics of these disciplines and how it enables value-based decision making.
Currently, he teaches doctoral courses in preparation of literature review, methodology, results, conclusions and recommendations for business, education and health care in the Doctorate in Education - Leadership program. Dr. Kotz also assists students in preparing research, defense of and presentation of dissertations/theses and performance results studies in Education, Business, National Security, Leadership, Social Justice and Health Care Management. This involves working with students over a 3-4 year period to complete their life's work.
He has written three books, Profiles in Kindness – Stories of Inspiration & Everyday Leadership (2020), Something Happened Today (2018), and Personality, Gender & Learning Styles (2014). He has an upcoming book to be released this Fall called Start Late – Finish Happy (2021), looking at ways to untap joy.

TOPIC:
Community College Student Reactions to Self-Reflection of Transferable Skills
Claire Maxson began working for Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis in 2001 part-time as a supervisor of evening classes at a local high school. She began teaching developmental English as an adjunct in 2003 and was one of the pilot instructors for the Student Success first-year seminar. She became full-time Student Success faculty in 2010 and the Foundations of Success Department Chair which houses Student Success in 2014. Her master’s degree is in Executive Development for Public Service and doctorate is in Higher Education with a focus on Community College Leadership both from Ball State University. Her bachelor’s degree is in journalism and secondary education from Indiana University-Bloomington. Prior to teaching full-time for Ivy Tech, she taught middle school journalism and social studies for seven years. Last year Claire served as the interim dean for the School of Business, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management and became dean of the School of Business, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management & the School of Public Affairs and Social Services for the Indianapolis campus in May 2021.
