Day 8 saw us waking up with Amarula Baboon Syndrome (ABS), so we were a little slow in getting up. We had dropped laundry off in a place behind the Spar in Franschhoek, and we needed to go pick it up, so we decided to go back to the same place as yesterday for breakfast. Most of us chose a little bit less sweet breakfast instead of the ice cream crepe special.
After picking up our laundry, we went back
over to the Graham Beck estate to do the wine tastings that we didn't do the previous day, meaning that Janie, Carla, and I did the wine tasting and Lee did the champagne tasting. The woman who served us on both days is a fabulously sweet woman and a real boon to the Graham Beck estate. She was kind enough to suffer through our requests for different types of wines and inquiries about becoming adopted by the Beck family.
After buying several bottles of Graham Beck's nectar, we headed out to the Fairview wine estate in Paarl.
Fairview is known for two things in addition to its wine: goats and
cheese. They're intertwined, naturally, and the influence of the goats also informs the name of one of its most popular wines: Goats Do Roam. Janie, Carla, and Lee gorged themselves on the cheese platter, and then we all dined on varieties of wild game and steak. Janie discovered her love of springbok with a fantastic springbok stir fry. In the restaurant, the din of vuvuzelas could be heard as they were playing the Germany - England game. There were more English fans than German fans, so the disappointment was palpable.
After gorging ourselves on food, we headed out to the Alluvia wine estate, as it was somewhat closer to the Cape Town airport, where we needed to head in the morning to continue on to the next leg of our journey. Unfortunately, we got there just as the sun was setting, so we were not able to fully enjoy the scenic views that were on offer. Since we had an early flight the next morning, we turned in early, satisfied that we'd amply consumed enough wine and great food for our weekend.
One note about Graham Beck wines that I didn't know until I got back. The Graham Beck Brut was the one that President Obama used to celebrate his election victory in 2008. You can read more here.
