Introduction: What is the mystery behind the spider web? Our project is to see how spiders use geometry to make their webs.
Materials:
Graph Paper
A ruler.
This will take 1-3 days.
Procedure:
1. Search how spiders make their webs.
2. Build a Scale model referring the spider's web templates in a geometry ratio
3. Design a spider web using graph paper and a ruler.
4. Look at different spider web designs
5. Draw a web of our choice on graph paper.
6. Find the area and the perimeter of the web.
7. Decide what to do with the half and quarter squares
8. Explore how geometry is used in the web.
9. Make a poster about the making of the spider web for each step
Scientific Principle/Essential Understanding: How do spiders use geometry to make their webs?
Our main principle for this project is working upon mainly with finding area & perimeter with the shapes (triangles & polygons) inside spider webs. We also find how ratios are used by spider's when creating their spider web's as well. We expand as we find different and more common ways, how geometry and spider webs can be used together. A few examples are ratios, proportions, translation, perimeter and area. Each has a different own unique relationship with spider web's . We chose to work with Area and Perimeter because it felt interesting and extraordinary trying to use area and perimeter inside triangles and polygons within the spider webs. We get to understand the concept on how finding the area or perimeter is used in shapes inside spider web's as well we see how geometry is used around us.
Formula's we used:
Area Formula for a Triangle: (1/2)bh
Perimeter Formula for a Triangle: a+b+c
Area Formula Chart for Polygons:
