HOVERCRAFT
Many people worked on the idea
of the Hovercraft over the years.
Many claim to have created
the hovercraft or Air Cushioned Vehnicle
(ACV) long before the SNR1 was built.
The ideas of the hovercraft started in the
ancient Greece era.The concept of a hovercraft
can be traced to as early as the 1700's. The Greeks were also
really interested in the concept of flying and tried
to conduct many experiments. Many people tried to
build a hovercraft before Christopher but he was
the first to succeed and have his experiment known to
the world. Christopher Cockerell invented the hovercraft
in 1956. He had an idea to make something float on
the surface of water. It was first tested in 1955. He used
a cat food tin and placed it inside a coffee tin and
used a hair dryer to make it hover over the water.
The SRN1 was built in 1959 after lots and lots
of convincing. It is sometimes displayed at the Museum of
Science and Industry. It is still preserved today for people to view.
Later on, the SRN4 could carry 30 cars and
250 people, or 800 people. In all the Hovercraft
was an overall great invention. It not only
fascinated many people, but it made floating over
the water and the earth possible. Its used today
for many purposes. Many are found on farms and used
for daily work. People also use them for fun
purposes. In all Hovercrafts added something
fun and amazing to the world.
Hovercrafts use blowers surrounding many sides
to make large amounts of air so the hovercraft
can float. The air below the device is high
pressured air while the top is low
pressured. The low pressured air produces lifting.
In order for it to be stable, its common for
a few holes to be cut out on the bottom
of the hovercraft. Usually the cushion
on the bottom is a flexible skirt
that helps with the gliding process
of the hovercraft. The name Hovercraft
was trademarked owned by a man named
Saunders-Roe. For this reason, many
companies are forced to change the
names of their creations.
In recent decades, the hovercraft has evolved
into a multi-purpose vehicle that saves
lives in rescue operations, transports
military troops, ferries passengers,
and provides a vast array
of recreational opportunities such as racing and
cruising to people throughout the world.
