pH Rainbow tube
Interviewing Mr. Magana
1. What is researched in this experiment? The rainbow effect is caused by using a color full pH indicator in the liquid with a Ph gradient. And you can keep changing colors by adding chemicals to alter the acidity of pH of the liquid.
2. What are some other materials that could be used to replace hydrofluoric acid? Vinegar, and you could do this, for the experiment to be more susceptible to children.
3. Have you ever done this experiment? Actually yes, I’ve done this experiment with my AP chemistry class. We had an accident, some of my students were doing their experiment and they dropped all of the solutions of deionized water on the floor because they were horseplaying.
4. What do the colors in the tube tell us about the pH ? the colors, if I remember well, they show us the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution, which is basically a solvent is water.
5. What happens in this experiment? A chemical or a physical change? Why, a chemical change of course! You are literary mixing chemicals and watching them change colors, thus the acidity.
6. How can your colors be brighter when you do this experiment? Add a rich amount of drops of the mixture of Deionized water universal indicator. Get a small tube, so the concentration of your chemicals is greater.
7. What are some tips while doing this experiment? Hmmm, well do the safety part right, also while pushing in the stopper on top of the tube keep in mind that pressure is easily transferred through a liquid. Always keep the bottom stopper against the tabletop to hold it in place when inverting the tube.
8. What are some safety precausions that are required? Well as usual while working with chemicals, wear gloves, apron, goggles, and yeah that’s pretty much it that I recall he-he-he.
9. How does the Ph scale function? Well to understand this you have to know that mixing acids and bases can cancel out or neutralize their effect. A substance that is neither acid nor basic is neutral. The Ph scale basically measures how acidic or basic a substance is.
10. Where can we dispose correctly of the final mixture? In the sink, its very easy haha.
