Jacob's ladder is a high voltage device that can be used to create an arc, that has been produced with the use of the voltage, traveling up two electrodes. This happens because of the hot air rises, as well as the arc. However, since this experiment does include the use of both high voltages, and currents that can be considered as lethal. For this bystanders, have to keep a fairly large distance from the ladder in general. The ladder must be used in a well ventilated area due to the fact that it can create Ozone in result to the electrical discharges. Also, one cannot stare at the arc for too long since it can result with with a blinding effect due to the amount of UV waves radiating off from the electrical arc.

The term 'Jacob's Ladder' isn't commonly known as a science experiment that uses high voltages or any electricity of the sort, instead, it is mainly know for a story coming straight from the bible, in which a man named Jacob is the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham. In this story, he is running away from his twin brother Esau, who had promised to kill him. Esau with enraged with his brother because Jacob had taken away is 'birthright' to the Jewish blessing as well as the inheritance. He found himself in a relative's house in the city of Haran, and turned in for the night, and as he slept, he dreamt of a ladder in between heaven and earth.

Another Jacob's Ladder related media is 1990's thriller/drama film about a man named Jacob Singer, who is returning from the Vietnam war and "struggles to maintain his sanity". This man begins to experience many hallucinations and flashbacks of the war, this is where he appears to practically lose it as he continues to experience these traumatic effect pretty much everywhere he went. The creator of this experiment remains quite unknown, though many people believe and have theorized that it's creator may actually be Nikola Tesla.

In fact, Jacob's ladder is known as a pretty neat prop, especially for horror and sci-fi movies- it's first appearance in Hollywood was in the 1931 version of Frankenstein in scenes such as where the monster came to life, and the doctor yelled "It's Alive!". Thus earning it's time of fame due to it's great appearance in a much simpler, and maybe easier manner. It was because of this particular movie that Jacob's Ladder has been recognized to a great extent, mainly having it being recognized as the 'Climbing Arc' instead.

In reality, Jacob's Ladder could considered as a useless prop, but it certainly isn't for those in the show business, or those who simply want to 'wow' a crowd. In most cases, people all around try to get the best type of prop to use in different occasions, such as Halloween season, or they may just people interested in the field of physics and are probably just trying to show off . Either way, there really isn't any actual use for this model other than being a great prop when it comes to creating a sense of suspense and simply surprising other people, that and showing off one's knowledge in physics.
