My PBL Project

Introduction:Driving Question: What is the science behind the laser bending ? My project is called Total Internal Reflection. My project is about getting a big plastic bottle and putting two holes in the bottom of them and then putting water into the bottle and putting the laser close to the right side and see the water arch down but the water will be turning green.

Safety Precautions : The only hazard thing about my project is not to point the laser into your eyes or other people's eyes.

Scientific Principal: In my project the formula I used was Snell's Law. This Law helps find out the different relations from angle incidence and refraction. A bottle filled with water and a laser beam going through it is total internal reflection. After all of the procedure have been completed i will put the laser beam through the water bottle; this is called refraction.

Refraction is when the laser beam is going straight through the water bottle so that when the water is dropping it causes a reflection. Reflection is a change of a wave-front between two different medias. The wave front will always return into a medium front. Another example, is the waves of the oceans they reflect on each other so they all end up doing the same thing. So that when a wave hits shore it goes back to its medium wave-front.

Materials: A big plastic bottle, laser, water, and scissors.

Procedure: I first get the big plastic bottle and poke two holes at the bottom of the bottle.

2nd: I put water into the bottle but not full like half way.

3rd: I left the bottle with the water and turn on the laser.

4th: I put the laser on the right side of the bottle and the water should be coming out green.
