History of Sharpie's

In 1857, Frederick W. Redington and William H. Sanford, Jr. found the Sanford Manufacturing Company sold mainly ink and glue. The company continued to grow, and eventually changed the name to Sanford Ink Company. They began to mainly focus on markers when they were able to create an ink that could write on almost any surface and eventually introduced the first Sharpie Fine Point black marker. Sharpie was often the term used for a permanent marker. The Sharpie Ultra Fine point marker was introduced in 1989.

In 1991, Sharpie markers became very popular. Permanent Markers were often used to label items of any surface type and not have the writing be removed. For example Permanent Markers are often used in the field of science, by labeling microscopy slides, beakers, test tubes, etc. The Newell Rubbermaid Company took over Sharpie's, the company was apart of Sanford Company, they were the new manufacture and promoter of writing tools. 1997 a variety of different colors of Sharpie Markers are created. Sharpie’s can be found almost everywhere, and these markers will continue to grow in popularity.

The strong scent of Sharpie's are due to the chemicals that allow the marker to be permanent. The ink in the permanent marker contains a carrier solvent, glyceride, pyrrolidone, resin and a colorant, making it waterproof. In 1952 Sidney Rosenthal invented the permanent marker. Eventually leading to the idea of the Sharpie, the first permanent marker in a pen style. Isopropyl Alcohol is proven to be the best to remove sharpie marks and does less damage to the surface marked on. Sharpies are considered to be non-toxic for the normal uses, such as writing on a poster and or labeling objects.
