Infinity Mirror
... And another movie made by WeVideo : Infinity Mirror
Introduction
In this experiment, we will create an infinity mirror which will produce infinity images of the LED lights and create an illusion that there is an infinity amount of lights; though, in reality is only a few of them. Mirrors date back ancient times when men saw reflections in a source of water (river or pond), believing it was magic. The first mirrors that were made were composed of polished stone (black volcanic glass, obsidian) and were found in Anatolia around 6000 B.C. Wayne Potter came up with the idea of infinity mirror, which is a set of mirrors, one reflective mirror and one one-way mirror. The one-way or partially reflective mirror reflects an image back onto the fully reflective mirror, creating a series of smaller and smaller reflections that appear from a far distance.
Driving Question
Does the position of the mirror affect the light on how it will be reflected?
Materials
Mirror 50*40 cm
One-way mirror 50*40 cm
LED lights (Christmas lights & any color)
Scissors
Ruler
Styrofoam (any size)
Duct tape
Blade
Marker
Before, adding the mirrors, make sure to clean the with Windex and a paper towel. This will create a more clearer illusion.
We will place the mirror, so make sure the mirror is facing up and tape it carefully. Flip the frame, and you will have your mirror placed.
Now, the LED lights will be placed in each dot you made in the Styrofoam.
Make sure to alternate between the rows.
Procedure
Gather all your materials. Your mirrors can be any size, and also the color of your LED lights can be any color you want
First of all, we need to build the frame of our infinity mirror. My mirrors measures 40* 50 cm, so I will need to make those dimensions of my frame
With a ruler and a marker, draw your points on the Styrofoam. You will need to make 4 pieces in total. Two of them will measure 0*8 cm & the other two will measure 50*8 cm.The reason for 8 cm is that will be the width of my frame.
When you are done putting the LED lights, you will put the one-way mirror on the front. Tape it carefully and don’t cover the whole mirror, only the sides.
After you have drawn your lines in the frame. You will cut each of them with the blade. Be careful while you are doing this and make sure that you cut them correctly.
You are done with your project, you only need to plug it in the outlet, and turn off the lights so you could see the reflection better. This will create an illusion that there’s infinity lights and space.
Another advice is that before you connect the frame, you will need to cut some of your 40*8 cm because that will go in between the 50*8 cm. Therefore, the 40*8 will need to be cut so it could fit correctly. I cut mine 4 cm each.
Now that you have your pieces, you will need to make holes in the Styrofoam so you could fit the LED lights. For the 50 cm piece, it will have a total of 30 LED Lights. I divided it into 2 parts, it will have 2 rows and each row will have 15 LED lights and each of them will be about 3.4 cm apart. For the 36 cm piece, it will have a total of 20 LED lights and will have 2 rows. Each row will have 10 LED lights and each of the will be about 3.5 cm.
Now we will connect the frame using tape and scissors. Make sure the frame is resistant so it can hold the 2 mirrors.
Scientific Principle/ Essential Understanding
Law of reflection- which is when light is reflected and then the eyes receive light waves, and make it appear that the waves are diverging from behind the mirror. Making it an allusion that is happening to the mirror behind it.
Safety Regulations
Be careful whenever you cut the mirror and when you are using the blade to cut the Styrofoam.
Lastly be careful whenever you are putting the LED lights, don't break them or damage them since an electrical accident could occur.
