RESEARCH

In this PBL we will measure, manipulate and investigate the rate in which a chemical reaction, using METHYLNE BLUE and a REDOX INDICATOR.

The materials that we will need for this experiment are:

    1. Erlenmeyer Flask

    2. Stopwatch

    3. Dextrose Solution

    4. Potassium Hydroxide Solution

    5. Methylene Blue Solution

Measurements will be given in procedures.

Procedures:

    1. Place 30 mL of dextrose solution 0.1 M in the Erlenmeyer Flask. Add 30 mL of potassium hydroxide solution 3.0 M to the flask.

    2. Add 1 or 2 drops of the methylne blue indicator to the flask

    3. Place the stopper firmly on the flask and swirl the solution. The solution should be blue.

    4. Place the flask on the table and allow the solution to rest, Observe the end result.

    5. REpeat the steps 3 and 4, and measure the amount of time needed for the color to change.

  1. Discuss your observations, inferences, explanations and extensions.

Safety:

These liquids are corrosive and really dangerous to the skin.

AVOID any contact with eyes and skin,

Clean up any accidents or spills immediately.

Wear safety goggles, latex gloves and a apron.
