Boiling Water With Vacuum Pump

Intoduction-

The idea of this project is to figure out why the boiling point of water doesn't affect if water boils or not.

What causes the water to boil is the atmospheric pressure coming from the vacuum pump. All you need are the materials and you can witness for yourself why the water boils.

Materials

Firstly you need ,

Bell jar,

Beaker,

Vacuum pump,

Food coloring,

and thermometer.

Procedure

Once you have the required materials, you begin the experiment

First you get the bell jar, and set it on a table with enough space for the vacuum pump and the bell jar.

Also make sure there is an available electrical socket to plug in the vacuum pump.

Next, fill the beaker up with warm water. Then add food coloring and take the temperature before you turn on the vacuum pump. Before you turn on the

vacuum pump make sure it is connected to the bell jar firmly.

After you do this, turn on the vacuum pump and wait about 2-5 minutes to witness the boiling of the water that will not be happening because of the water reaching it's boiling point.

Scientific Principle

The physics principle behind this project is that the atmospheric pressure is what causes the water to boil. Usually for example you would have to warm up water to it's boiling point for water to boil. Atmospheric pressure is the force per unit area exerted into a surface by the weight of air above that surface in the atmosphere of Earth. The boiling point of water is 100°C or 212° F at 1 atmosphere of pressure (sea level). This is important to know in this experiment because as you will see, when the water boils the water will not be at 100 Celsius or 212 Fahrenheit. The physics is that when pressure is applied the force is decreased causing the water to boil. You will be able to see this clearly once you add the food coloring to see just how much the water boils.

Safety Regulations

Always be careful when dealing with glass and heavy objects. Make sure you are supervised as you do the experiment, if you happen to drop the beaker be sure to let your teacher know before trying to clean it up yourself. Also make sure the cord to the electrical pump stays clear of any contact with water, as to prevent electrocution.
