MATERIALS:
1-)A Dunking bird
2-)A cup of water
Science Behind it: Drinking Bird works using properties of thermodynamics, converting Thermal energy into Mechanical energy and uses ideal-gas law.The physical principle behind the drinking bird and the hand boiler is the Combined gas law because of how it establishes a proportional relationship between temperature and pressure exerted by a gas in a constant volume. Methylene chloride (dichloromethane) is a nonflammable liquid often used as a solvent and paint remover.
Procedure:
The head is coated with red felt that absorbs water with every drink. When water evaporates from the fuzz on the Dippy Bird's head, the head is cooled.
The temperature lowers in the head condenses the methylene chloride vapor, lowering the vapor pressure in the head
The greater vapor pressure in the abdomen forces fluid to go up through the neck and to the head.
Making the birds head heavy it tips over into the water, making the bottom empty
Vapor bubbles travels through the tube and into the head. Liquid drains from the head, displaced by the bubbles.
The fluid drains back to the bottom making the bird tip back over
SAFETY!!!
Contact with methylene chloride can cause skin irritation. Inhalation or ingestion should be avoided because the chemical is a mutagen, teratogen and possibly could be carcinogen. The vapor quickly evaporates and disperses, so the best way to deal with a broken toy is to ventilate the area. Not intended for use by children under age 8.
