Secondhand Smoke Harmony Science Academy

Introduction:This project is about secondhand smoking and its effects on non-smokers who breathe in secondhand smoke, it will show how the non-smokers get the same chemicals like those who smoke.

Scientific principle:Secondhand smoke can cause harms in many ways. In the U.S. it is responsible for:

- about 46,000 deaths from heart desease in people who don't even smoke

-3,400 lung cancer deaths in non-smoking adults

- worse asthma and asthma-related problems in up to 1 million asthmatic children

- between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections (lung and bronchus) in children under 18 months of age, with 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizations each year

- the costs of extra medical care, illness, and death caused by SHS are over $10 billion per year

It is hard to quit smoking because its addictive but it can save millions of lives if it stops.

Materials:

-lighter

-ashtray

-smoke filters(napkins)

-provided Innocent Smoker Demonstration Model

-cigarette

Procedure:

1. Place the demonstrator on a surface that will not burn,and use the provided ashtray to catch the falling ashes. Falling ashes could damage an unprotected surface.

2.Place one of the smoke filters between the child's face and filter plate located in front of the fan, and plug in the power cord.

3.Insert a filtered cigarette into the tube in the adult model's mouth. Do not insert the cigarette beyond its filter.

4.Light the cigarette as you alternately squeeze and release the black rubber bulb located on the back of the box.

5.While pumping the bulb, replace the lid. Be sure that the lid forms a tight seal with the box.

6.Continue to pump with the rubber bulb every few seconds until the cigarette is extinguished.

7.Turn the switch located on the power cord to start the fan.

8.After the smoke has been removed from the box, shut off the fan and remove the filter. The deposited tar will be visible on the filter.

9.Open the box outside or in a well-ventilated, designated smoking area. Opening the box will cause smoke odor to be released, even after the smoke has disappeared.
