Introduction
Dropper Poppers are more than just half of a rubber ball. This incredible device seemingly defies the laws of physics by bouncing higher than where you dropped it from! This only requires a small amount of 'activation energy' to work. It is molded into a very special shape that allows it to store elastic potential energy and then convert it to kinetic energy with a POP when dropped from a low height (i.e. a small amount of activation energy is applied.) Drop it from a height of about 4 feet and it will jump to 8 feet or more!
How does it work?
Find a floor or table with a hard surface and lots of space and a high ceiling. Press your thumbs into the center of the popper and turn it inside out. Tell your friends or students to stand back! Drop the Dropper Popper flat side down from a height of about 4 feet and it will jump 8 feet or more!
Safety regulation
Don’t let the Dropper Popper pop in your hand!
The Dropper Popper will spring up like a normal popper, but it also provides a unique demonstration of elastic potential energy and conservation of energy.
Conservation of Energy: A perfectly elastic ball would bounce back to its original height. How does this popper bounce higher? You stored extra energy in it when you pushed it with your fingers.
Elastic Potential Energy: Energy is stored in the popper as in a molecule. With a little bit of “activation energy” (dropping from a height), the stored energy can be released.
