My demo is about Purple Paradox.
Purple Paradox is an experiment where the water changes color in just a shake! The name is called Purple Paradox because the liquid changes into purple.
A little video of it..(Purple Paradox.MOV)
Here's What You'll Need...
- Purple Paradox Powder [Figure 1]
- Activator Solution [Figure 2]
- Jumbo test tubes with caps [Figure 3]
- Test tube rack [Figure 3]
- Safety glasses[Figure 4]
- Measuring scoop[Figure 5]
- Cloth napkin or handkerchief( You get it)
[all Figure 5]
^You'll want to practice this experiment next to a sink where you can easily rinse out the test tubes and ste up another reaction.
Procedures:
1.Have your all necessary materials ready and follow the safety rules. Put on your attractive safety glasses
2.Fill one of the large test tubes half full with ordinary tap water.( Room temperature)
3. Use the measuring scoop to add one level scoop(2ml) of Pruple Paradox Powder to the water and the test tube.[ Figure 6&7]
4.Screw on the lid and genlty shake test tube, the water should start to fizzle and change color.[ Figure 8]
5.Now add 4 drops of Activator Solution to the mixer in the test tube.[Figure 9]
Safety
*If possible, wear an apron and gloves
* Besure to wear safety glasses/goggles
*Avoid direct skin contact with chemicals
6.Screw the cab on tightly and give the tube a good shake. Notice how the liquid turns a deep purple color, thats exacly what you want.[ Figure 10]
7.Set the tube in the test tube rack. The purple color will fade back to clear in 30-60 seconds.
The Science Behind It:
We can explain the science behind the Purple Pardox by using the "Chemical Equilibrium - Le Châtelier Principle". The Purple Paradox contains a special dye that has two different "oxidation states"- one of which has deep purple color, and th eother of which is colorless. Certain chemical reactions( called oxidation adn reduction reactions) can make the dye shift back and forth between these two states.
When you first mix up the solutions, all of the dye in the purple( oxidized) form. But soon a chemical in the Purple Paradox Powder reduces the dye to the colorless form. When you shake the tube, oxygen in the air in the tube dissolves in the liquid and quickly oxidizes the dye back to the purple form. As long as ther eis enough oxygen in the tube, you can repeat the color changes many times. The Activato Solution contains special chemicals that speed up both reactions.
