Elisha Charley, a Nihok'aa Diyin Dine'e (Holy Surface People/Navajo), grew up in Dennehotso, AZ, and White Mesa, AZ (northeastern Navajo Nation region). She is a Bit’ahnii Diyin Dine’e (folded arms people-mother clan), Deeshchii’nii yá’chíín (start of the red streak people-father’s clan), Tabaaha dabí’cheii (water edge people clan-maternal grandfather), Táchii’nii dabí’nálí (red running into the water people -paternal grandfather’s clan). Her research centers on Indigenous planning and co-creating dialogues on housing justice and policy in the Navajo Nation. Charley developed an interest in participatory design, cooperative residential construction, owner-builder, or self-help housing by helping her parents build and co-manage construction projects in their family homes, surrounding housing production, and livestock structures. These experiences inspired Charley to pursue higher education in the design and planning disciplines. She continues her participatory advocacy as an Indigenous Research Fellow with the Nááts'íilid Initiative, Dennehotso, AZ, where she engages with Navajo communities for reciprocity centering Nihokaa' Diyin Dine'e epistemology and perspectives framing her research topics.
Below are some examples of the intersectionality of traditional Nihok'aa Diyin Dine'e architecture and technology. I captured with Lidar technology and varying 3D modeling software. The tools include Faro Scene, Virtu Surv, Revit, ReCAP, AutoCAD, and Virtual Reality. The videos display some of the processing and final outcome of the data, including a 3D-printed point cloud of the Male Hogan.
