Introduction to the Regatta
Welcome to the 2024 Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta
Commodores’ Welcome:
Both Commodore Ian Ormesher of RRYC and Commodore Win Schwab of YPYC welcome you to the 29 th Annual Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta and invite you to participate in this important fund-raising event, scheduled October 4-6, 2024. Co-hosted for many years by our two local sailing clubs, this regatta is a major event in the southern bay, usually attracting 100 boats, and once- 142 entries!
We have a very talented regatta team comprised of members from our two clubs along with members from Regent Point YC, both of the Hospice groups we support (Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck--non-medical products and services-- and Riverside Hospice Agencies--medical products and services), and many volunteers from the greater River community who donate time, funding or services each year.
The two Co-Chairmen of this team are Tom Chapman of RRYC, for water-based activities and John Tidwell of YPYC, for land-based activities and they have been hard at work planning this event.
Again, welcome, we hope that you enjoy this important regatta and join us again next time!
Fair Winds!

Introduction to the Co-Chairmen of this Regatta
The regatta team, composed of experienced members from three or more local sailing clubs and other river community groups, is led by two veteran sailors and racers who volunteer each year to pull this event together and make it the success that it is.
Tom Chapman, of RRYC, chairs the sea-based portions of this event--and along with Jerry Latell of Evolution Sails and many other volunteers --announces the race, recruits all entrants, gets boats rated and registered, designs the race courses and manages the racing events, including on-water photography, chairs the Skipper's Meetings, compiles the scores and winners, announces and awards the trophies during the Sunday afternoon ceremony, pausing for the photography and finally, helps write up the press releases!
John Tidwell, of YPYC, the chair of the land-based portions of this regatta, manages a very able team of volunteers from three local sailing clubs and local organizations including Hospice. John chairs the committee meetings, and with his sales team, raise money through advertising along with other donations, then, with Carroll Schwab, coordinates the development of the Regatta Program, a high quality handout for all skippers and crew. All team members then help to set up the event facility on the grounds of RRYC, procure the equipment, food, beverages and prepare and serve five food/beverage events and then break it down. And several, including John, also race in this event!
