SYLLABUS
ASIANLAN 499, Independent study on Vietnamese culture and language - (1 credit)
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is a short introduction course to Vietnamese language and culture. Students will travel to Vietnam, study the language and take part in activities to practice the language and reinforce what they have learnt from the lessons. The lessons are designed as the orientation and preparation for students to visit and interact with people at different historical and cultural sites of interest. Students will be introduced to various aspects of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam and will be exposed to history, culture, arts, religions, architecture, ethnic groups, etc of Vietnam.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Be confident to travel in Vietnam
- Be able to use Vietnamese to communicate and get to know Vietnamese people
- Gain better understanding of Vietnam in general, and the capital city of Hanoi in particular
- Be able to present and write about various aspects of Vietnamese culture in traditional and modern contexts
TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED
Students will be given a handout and materials prepared by language instructors for the course.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students are required to participate in every activity from the course with 10 hours of class, and extra hours with on-site assignments to complete the requirement of independent study by ALC Department.
There will be a blog site to keep track of the program activity that each student will contribute one entry to the blog (This will be written in English). There will be short quiz and homework for students to review and consolidate the lessons. Students are encouraged to take the opportunity in Vietnam to practice Vietnamese with local people. Each student will collect data to complete a brief Cultural Profile (in Vietnamese). Students can take photos to include in the project. The topics can be:
- People profile: students write about one person/ family that they know while in Vietnam
- Place profile: students can write about one special place that they like during the trip.
Students can also write about other cultural aspects that they learn during the program. There will be a short presentation in the class at the Winter Mid-term where students can share their presentations in class.
COURSE POLICY
Students are expected to attend all class sessions, and prepare before the class or any trips during the program.
