Hindu Temple in Newfoundland

The Hindu Temple was located in Mount Pearl from 1976 to 1995. Responding to the needs of the growing community, a new temple was built at the present site. The new facility was consecrated on May 7, 1995. There is a prayer hall, library and yoga room upstairs and a community hall and kitchen downstairs. The temple spires (dome and tower) were built in March 2002 at which time the temple celebrated the Kumbhabhishekam. Kumbhabhishekam is a sacred ceremony for sanctifying a newly constructed temple tower and dome. The deity worshipped is Krishna. Krishna idol is made of marble. He is shown as a young man wearing a yellow silk dhoti, peacock feather in his crown, playing the flute. In this depiction he assumes a characteristic relaxed pose; he stands with one leg bent in front of the other and the flute raised to his lips. The name Krishna (is the 57th name in the Vishnu Sahasranama, a collection of the 1000 names of Lord Vishnu) and means the Existence of Bliss. The temple serves the religious, cultural and spiritual needs of the community. The children are given every opportunity to participate in doing puja and singing bhajans. Although the temple primarily is a place of worship for the Hindu community, it is open to people of all faiths.

Hindu Temple St. John’s (Assoc.) of NL

Mount Pearl temple was established in 1976. Swami Chinmayananda donated the marble iddol of Krishna to the Hindu community. A devotee of Swamiji donated her house in Mount Pearl. Swami Dayananda installed the idol.

A building fund was started in 1987 when there was a need for a bigger temple to accommodate the growing Hindu community. Soon the land was bought and the temple construction began in the summer of 1994. In May 1995 the Krishna idol was moved into the new building.

The temple towers, a spire and dome were added in March 2002. Priests from the Montreal Murugan temple performed Kumbhabhishekam.
