About Me
Professional Experience: I work as a Professor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where I focus primarily on teaching preservice mathematics teachers. I hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and MS in Mathematics from Illinois State University. My dissertation research concerned the teaching and learning of trigonometry in the modern sciences. The completed dissertation, Investigating the Purpose of Trigonometry in the Modern Sciences, can be downloaded here. I also hold a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire (my focus was instrumental and general music teaching) with a second major in mathematics education. From 2011 to 2013, I worked as the assistant editor for the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education. Prior to my graduate studies, I taught high school mathematics in Neenah, Wisconsin.

Research Interests: Use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics, rethinking grades in mathematics education, the teaching and learning of trigonometry, the history of the implemented mathematics curriculum, the development of probabilistic reasoning, and the professional development of teachers of mathematics. Additionally, I am interested in helping others pursue graduate degrees in mathematics education. The field is in need of more motivated individuals but the process can be intimidating to those on the outside. If you are thinking about pursuing a Master's, Ph. D., or Ed. D. in Mathematics Education, please feel free to send questions my way.
Facebook Group: If you are on Facebook, I moderate the Mathematics Education Researchers Facebook Group. Membership is open to anyone interested so feel free to apply.
Other Interests: social justice, financial education, board games, linux (Ubuntu mostly), musicals, open source technologies, indie games, puzzling, and science fiction. I am an active member of the Waking Up White Collaborative working to dismantle oppressive and racist systems within my personal and professional life, help to organize a board game convention called Coulee Con, and work as a financial educator and coach through Coulee Financial Coaching.
