Private Lessons

What are private lessons?

Private lessons are individual teaching sessions provided to your child by a professional musician who specializes in your child’s instrument. The private lesson staff is made up of degreed music educators that are hand-picked by the band staff at HeMS and the Director of Fine Arts for RRISD.

Why should my child take private lessons?

Each private teacher will design an instructional sequence and enrichment program tailored to your child’s individual needs that often goes beyond the scope of material covered in the regular band classes.  Students who take private lessons frequently progress at faster rates than their peers (who are not involved in private lessons).

When do private lessons occur?

Professional lesson teachers are available to teach during band class, or before/after the school day.  The lessons occur once a week at Hernandez Middle School and last either 23 minutes (half a class period), 30 minutes, or 50 minutes. Lesson times are arranged between the private lesson instructor and the student/parent.

How do we pay our lesson teacher?

Payment for the lessons are made directly to the lesson teacher at the beginning of each month.  (Private lesson instruction rates differ between each lesson teacher.) There are scholarships available for lessons by application.
