Our middle school track and field program is open to sixth through eighth grade runners. There is an ability level match for most anyone who signs up for the team. Registration for this team should be done through the middle school activities office with the official start date being after spring break. The team practices Monday through Friday after school at Heritage Middle School. Additional information can be found through the middle school websites.
On occasion, a middle school student athlete demonstrates both the social emotional maturity and high level of competitiveness needed to participate in track and field at the high school level. This has been most successful when policies, expectations and necessary support are in place.
When a middle school student-athlete (only grades 7-8) has demonstrated the ability, interest and commitment the high school coaches will welcome these individuals to participate with the high school team for a two week trial period, which will start the first day of practice. During this trial period it is expected that middle school student-athletes will have the same expectations as high schoolers, which includes 100% attendance at practice and meets, including spring break if they are invited to join. During the second week of the trial period coaches will discuss and ultimately decide whether or not currently participating middle school student-athletes are developmentally ready to participate with the high school team or if they should continue their season with the middle school team. Coaching staff will take into account many things including but not limited to: athletic ability, sportsmanship, effort at meets and in practice, attendance, social/emotional development, positive parent/guardian support and involvement, noted promise as a track and field athlete, etc. If a student athlete is not invited to join the high school, they will have a roster spot on the middle school team.
Prior to a middle school student-athlete registering for high school track and field one or more of the following must happen:
a varsity or middle school coach must recommend a student to one of the high school track and field head coaches
a track and field coach reaches out to a student-athlete
a student or parent/guardian reaches out to a track and field head coach to show interest and submit recorded PRs for events in which an athlete has previously participated
In addition, each student-athlete and their parent(s)/guardian(s) must sign an agreement understanding the guidelines for participation and commitment to the trial period and possibly an entire high school season.
Should a student-athlete be asked to join the high school team for the entire season they would need to ride the bus to Two Rivers each day after school for practice and arrangements will be made by Coach Lucio with individual parents for meet day transportation.
