What is a hedgehog?

A hedgehog is a small, nocturnal creature not native to North America. Wild hedgehogs are native to England, Asia, Europe and Africa.

Although hedgehogs do not look like porcupines, people still mistake these for at least relatives. Porcupines are far different. The hedgehog, unlike the porcupine, have smooth quills that aren't barbed and are not as sharp. Imagine petting a hairbrush when you pet a hedgehog.

Hedgehogs usually weigh between 220 and 1000 grams. They eat mealworms, select vegetables, cat food, or specialized hedgehog food.
