Born on the frozen prairie, Matt comes from a lineage of musicians at least 4 generations deep. Early musical exploration found him next to his dad's upright piano, rocking out in time on his rocking horse.
Trained first on piano, he later picked up the trombone which got him out of spelling class in grade school. In high school he picked up the guitar, and bass not long after. A crazy sorcerer catapulted Matt on a percussive, one-string rhythmic journey from which he has not recovered, and was the gateway instrument to all sorts of percussion.
His musical journey has brought him to back Chris Montez, and play with members of the Africa 70 and Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth Big Band. His bands have opened stages for Aterciopelados, Armandinho, and Yellow Man. He's toured internationally, and by bicycle, pedaling 1500 miles and putting on over 30 audience powered concerts between Vancouver, BC and Oakland, CA with the Pleasant Revolution & Biketopia Music Collective (sponsored by Shure). You can still find him biking to gigs as the bicycling bassist.
Many thanks to mentors & guides: Bill Kearney, Jeff & Mike Carlson, Bill Batemen, Mestre Perere, Mark Lamson, Paul Horn & Geoffrey Omadhebo.
Matt's recording career started when he realized you could measure muscle movements with electrodes - reverse the current flow and you could stimulate muscles with direct current.
Electro-mechanical systems operate on the same fundamental principles, and recording clean brainwaves are much like clean recordings of a band. While his earliest musical recordings were to tape, he skipped straight to digital for multi-track engineering.
To support his music habit, Matt has often had to turn to Mad Science.
