What should I bring?
Each day bring a laptop, some pens, and either your lunch or lunch money. You may wish to bring a timer, but most kids use their phones. You may wish to bring your phone charger, laptop charger, water bottle, or materials for note-taking.
What should I wear?
Debate camp is very casual every day, so wear what is most comfortable for learning. Shorts, jeans, sweats, and flip-flops are fine. You will NOT need any formal attire, but we may have Pajama Day or Water Day.
What if I have special dietary needs?
Just let us know by email in advance and we will do our best to provide options for you. We do have a fridge and microwave available to all students so you can certainly bring your own preferred items. We usually have a vegetarian option for lunch each day.
What if I have a conflict with Orientation at HHS?
Debaters have permission to attend the early morning orientations that are held to accommodate kids in our Summer Camp programs. Football, Band, Debate and other Fall Activities should attend those sessions to avoid missing camp activities. If a conflict is unavoidable, just communicate with Ms. Solice (solicel@lisd.net) and she will make accommodations.
What academic skills are needed for camp?
If you are comfortable in pre-AP English and/or Pre-AP Social Studies you should be ready for camp. It helps to be a strong reader and be interested in learning about debate. If you enjoy strategy games, politics, news, verbal competitions, vocabulary games and debating with your friends, you will probably have fun with policy debate. If you struggle with reading aloud, or do not enjoy competition, this camp might be stressful for you.
What technology needs will I have?
You need a laptop with Word on it. You will need to download Verbatim to your laptop. This is a free product used by most debaters throughout the nation to help quickly organize and retrieve files.
What formats of debate do you teach?
At this time, we teach policy debate for beginners. Although a novice who is interested in later specializing in other formats of debate like LD or PF, would still benefit from the theory and skill basics covered in the Beginner Lab. For students already experienced in Interp, extemp, congress, LD or PF, we have advanced work-sessions, topic seminars and practice rounds for those events.
