On the morning of March 23, 2021 a 400-meter-long (1,300 ft), 224,000-ton vessel with a capacity of 20,000 TEU was struck by powerful winds. As a result, it became wedged across the waterway, with its bow and stern lodged against opposite canal banks, halting all traffic until it was eventually freed.
